Achilles Tang/Chevron Tang

Hey All!

I just purchased an Achilles Tang from Dr. Mac. He arrived last Friday and is currently in a 24 gallon nano-cube being qt'd. There are no other fish in there and I have a Hydor Korillia 600 gph in there to add additional flow since these are a surge zone fish. The tank also has the standard filter return adding flow as well.

The fish's main home will be my 125g display tank. It currently houses a Yellow Tang and a Chevron. Both have been in the tank well over 1 year. My original plan was to remove the Chevron and have the Achilles and Yellow as the aquarium's only surgeons. The Chevron is proving nearly impossible to remove. Is there any chance that the Chevron and Achilles Tang would get along? I know they are different species and look different but I don't want to endanger the soft bodied Achilles Tang if the Chevron where to attack.

The Achilles is eating well in qt. He grazes off the rocks but shows little interest in norii sheets. He is eating spirulina brine shrimp very well and picks at New Life Spectrum pellets.

Well.......I think 3 tangs in a 125 gallons is to push things a little....

Achilles is very susceptive to infections and is the third most agressive tang. The first is the Clown Tang, second is Sohal.

things may be ok for the first weak, then they will get stressed and very agressive.

I think you should build another tank, think about a 250 g.

I know it's easy to me to say but the things are like they are. Bigger is better when the fishes in discussion are tangs.

sadly space requirments wont allow for the 250g option. perhaps once the achielles has worked through a 30 day qt and is totally parasite free Ill tear out some rock and remove all tangs with the exception of the achilles.

yes the chevron will pick on the achilles

and then the achilles will probally get ich from all the stress

then the ich may transfer to other fish

(it is hard to introduce new tangs with established ones)

things that have helped me are

-put him when the lights are off
-move your rocks around (not just a few, all of them)
-feed them heavily to distract the tangs
-introduce multiple fish at the same time disperses the aggression
-lastly i would say if your overstocked the tangs seem to care less about eachother, although i wouldnt recommend overstocking (kind of like freshwater chiclids)
-get a bigger tank
-take out the established tang and introduce it after your new guy gets settled in
-be able to treat them in the display if they do get ich

I'm curious, I thought that the bristletooth Tangs were not that aggresive. I would have thought that the Achilles would pick on the Chevron Tang?

^^ Not when the Chevron was there first.

24g QT, I will be surprised if the Archilles makes it through QT, it wont be enjoying the limited space.

I have a kole that has earned the name Blade. We added a fairy wrasse once, and the tang went bersurk. The wrasse hid in the rocks. The tang found him, went verticle and lowered his tail in to the rock work and shook it back and forth. I've never seen such a detemined tang. We had to remove the wrasse.

I think the bristletooths may tend to be calmer, but they all have their own personalities.

Iv'e wondered about that. I currently have a Blonde Naso in a 29g (tall) QT. Should I pull him out? Anyone with thoughts on whether they should be in bigger QTs?

Big fish require large QT's. Fish that are open water swimmers and are use to having lots of swim room typically do not do well in small QT's which many people have a habit of having on hand.

Yes this will be the right thing to do.

I have successfully Hypoed a 4" achilles in a 30 gallon just fine.

Maybe its just me but that is entirely incoreect. Achilles are one of the more peacful tangs like the nasos. With tangs, the sohal and clown are without a doubt the agressors. If you supply your tank with a few vegie clips/rock and keep them full of algae/romain at all times you shouldnt have a problem. Fish tend to be more agressive with lack of food rather than territory. Thats why when you see tanks stocked plumb full with tangs people are confused to how they all live together, majoity of the times these fish are fed 3-10 times daily with algae/calurpa/romain everywhere for grazing. Tangs cannot be overfed on algae, they are built to mow just like cows. But as for mixing these tang you never know until you try. Move stuff around and keep them fat and you will be ok. It would help if the achilles was bigger than the other 2 tangs
