Achilles Tang fishlist

How can it be OK to keep a Powder Blue, Powder Brown, Goldrim, and Blue Caribbean Tang in a 100 gallon tank but not an Achilles. They are all in the same fish family and grow to be the same size and shape. I left out the Sohal because they get over a foot long. All tangs need lots of swimming room, water movement and excellent water conditions to survive the rules are the same.

:lmao:

None of those fish should be kept in a 100 gallon tank!!!!
It is pretty obvious that no one is going to talk you out of keeping the Achille's in what is definitely considered a small tank for this tang. I kept an Achillle's in a 300 gallon and he seemed cramped, plus I eventually sold him because he got extremely territorial. Achilles need alot of room and turbulence, they are always on the go.

If you did indeed research the Achille's tang, you would already know a 120 gallon is not appropriate.....

I swear nobody listens any more. I know most people believe a 6' tank is the minimum for an Achilles, i got that. I already have the tang and my question is what other fish should go with him?

Why is everyone jumping down my neck when there are hundreds of threads with tangs in tanks smaller than a 100 gallons and when the title of the thread is, Rate my tank. All any one can say is nice tank, great aqua scape, what kind of lights are you using but never i think that 2-3" blue tang is too big for a 75 gallon. I personally believe if you buy a small tang and do have plans to upgrade in the future as your fish and corals grow then there is nothing wrong with keeping a tang in a smaller tank. I never said the Achilles would spend his whole life in my 120, I said 1 year if even that long.

And by saying "LOOKED HAPPY" I mean not stressed, uncomfortable or fighting with other fish. From what I've read Achilles and other large tangs become very aggressive when there home has become too small for them and as long a my tang doesn't behave this way I feel fine with keeping him. I guess some of you feel better if I just returned him to a LFS for pennies on a dollar and watch him die from diseases like ich because most saltwater owner have tanks smaller than 100 gallons and consider this fish to be too expensive.

If you think the posters in this forum are going to overlook that you are going to keep an Achille's in a 120, you are in the wrong forum.Your not going to get the response you wanted......

Given that you are keeping the fish, I would not put other tangs in with him. Mine gets scrappy with the other tangs. He pretty much ignores everyone else except the blennies. Perhaps it's that they are herbivores. He doesn't bother them much though.

Perhaps it's that they are herbivores.

I agree with this observation. My tangs pay no attention to the myriad of planktivores in my tank. But the minute another "rock picking" fish shows up, look out! :uzi:

I recommend stocking for the tank you have, not the tank you HOPE to have. Kill less fish that way.

+1

I tell people this CONSTANTLY. You have no clue about the future.

I got a naso for a 135g (6' long) and she grew incredibly fast. I had to upgrade quickly to an 8' 240g for her. Then a year later...divorce forced me to sell my tank. I lucked out and had a good friend that owns the hatchery Sustainable Aquatics. Now she's in a massive lagoon and loving life.

But my point is...how many good homes will there be for wayward tangs?

Btw my LFS does not sell Achilles or Naso tangs because so few people can keep them happy.

Nearest I can tell you are not listening either...I told you to keep the fish as you already have him....JUST DON'T ADD ANY MORE TANGS!

Maroon Clown
maybe a Dwarf Angel
A medium sized Wrasse

NO, I heard you. I just did a poor job of acknowledging you. Thanks for making a recommendation. I'm thinking of adding:

5 Bartlett Anthias
Flame Angel
Chromis or a blue colored wrasse if one exist

OK, let me start by saying that I have 4 AT's in a 400G FOWLR. My oldest is 5 years in my tank and the youngest 6 months. All are doing very well, but I will state for the record that they require significant open water space. Now, in terms of neighbors, I have 4 Multibarred Angels, a pair of Golden Pygmy Angels, 2 Squareback Anthias, a Copperband BF, and a Pair of Mitratus BFs in the tank. There is no aggression other than the occasional fight over a feeder clam. In a tank your size, I would not add anything more than a couple of gobies, or small wrasses - just too confined IMO. If you are willing to upgrade soon, then you could look to do more. Please trust me when I say that open water space is really essential to keeping these guys happy and in good shape.

BTW, stay away from the Flame Angel. They get really possessive and aggressive around their dens. I would go with a less aggressive species if you were adamant about a Pygmy Angel.

Tease!
Can we get a pic?

I'll begin by saying that it is not easy photographing Speed Racer here... the big guy is just over 9" and my other smaller ones are all under 4" ... you will see them as blurs in the background:hmm4:

Here are a couple pictures of my Achilles Tang, I don't know if you consider them "decent pics" but here they are:

It is a great fish and I think the most striking looking in my tank. I think I have had him for a little over 4-months. Like everybody else I say 6' tank is a minimum. However in the situation of the OP who seems to definitely keeping his AT at this point, I would recommend it being your only tang. I hope you have lots of flow and a big skimmer to pump lots of oxygen into the water.

RYSHARK: how big is your AT?

The first one is pretty good and exceeds anything I have been able to capture. The 2nd one is a bit fuzzy with him movng too much, his scars are lines, not dots. I keep getting those, or pics of half a fish!
