Achilles Tang?????

Unarce

Unshackled
Hey Everyone,

I took my youngest to Capital Aquarium today (yeah, I know) to feed the Koi. Now, I normally don't buy stuff from there, but they just received an Achilles Tang yesterday. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see if he eats.

Well, he ate. Now I'm on the fence about getting him. It's one thing to find an Achilles that actually eats. It's another when they actually eat flakes, IMMEDIATELY! Which this guy did.

I have him on hold until tomorrow. My only reservation is adding him to a tank that already has a Sohal and Purple Tang.

In case anyone wants in on this rare, eating Achilles, and would like to talk me out of it, let me know. I may consider releasing the hold to you.

Regards,

Karl

:) Ich are always welcome to make an appearance in my tank. They never stay long;)

Honestly, I think I want someone to talk me out of it:lol:

Rich had an Achilles tang once. he didn't quarantine it and it had velvet. Killed all the fish in his tank including a pair of clowns he'd had for several years. Speaking of velvet, he recently lost a flame angel too. Luckily it was quarantined, but he didnt' have any copper to treat it and it was gone really fast.

Sorry to hear about that. Yeah, velvet's the worst.

Ich itself isn't a fatal ailment. Usually, if a fish is unable to fight it off, it's either due to the tank conditions or if the fish was doomed from the beginning (another ailment, cyanide caught, etc.).

It didn't help that I just fed my fish and began to visualize the Achilles darting around in my tank

:(

IF you want it so bad, get it.... its about what you want and thats the only thing that matters.... But A QT would be a good idea

I shouldn't say it, but I never QT. You all are great for doing it the right way. I've just never lost a fish because I didn't QT another (knock on wood).

Getting beat up by current inhabitants is another story. Right now, I'm leaning towards not getting him, because of the Tangs I have.

How's the saying go? Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Tangs got a bad rap for ich because the majority of people don't quarantine and treat for specific ailments, or worse yet, don't recognize exactly what the problem is before administering some general type of bottled treatment. I have 3 tangs in my tank and none of them have ever had ich and I've had the yellow since 2002. All three made the move from my old tank of 9 years into my new system that's over a year and a half old now.

Velvet is the real bad boy. Had an achillies wipe out every fish except for my gobies early on in my career, and it only took about 4 days.

I also keep several cleaner shrimp in the tank, and each of the tangs visit the cleaning station at least once a day.

 Definitely 'do as I say, not as I do'. QT those suckers.

The Tangs inability to produce a protective slime coat is the main reason they are so vulnerable.

Man, time goes by fast. Can't believe your new tank's been up for a year and a half.

BTW, that GARF piece has really settled in the new tank. It's encrusted and starting to show a branch. That piece truly brings new meaning to the phrase 'slow grower'. My PM grows faster:rolleye1:

Preach on my no quarunteeenn brotha!!

Well Im off to buy some "reef safe" snake oil for my chevron tang before he bites the dust!!

That no ich stuff worked enough to make is subside long enough last time, for the fish to take over, but man is it spendy, and takes a long time!!!
