Achilles Tang

Charlie's Angel

New member
Just finished acclimating the new guy and put him in the tank. Lights will be off for a few more hours, but from what I saw all looks great. The whole transaction was perfect and another kudos to LA. Thank you very much and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this guy thrives in his new home.

Charlie's Angel,

The Achilles Tang is a beautiful specimen that should make a great addition to your aquarium. We are glad you were pleased with your ordering experience and the Tang! We appreciate the care you are taking to acclimate him to your aquarium and please keep us posted as to his progress.

Kris:

Can you let me know what he was eating before he left your facility. Tonight, I fed the tank some frozen mysis, nori and formula two. He acted like he wanted to eat but nothing. Everything was soaked in garlic. Just want to see what he liked, so I could purchase that for him.

Thanks

Charlie

Charlie’s Angel,

Thank you for your reply. The Achilles Tang was fed Sea Veggies and Formula Two . However, it is quite normal for any fish to refrain from eating for the first few days due to the stress of shipping. We recommend offering a clip with a quality sheet algae so that the Tang can eat when it feels comfortable.

Just wanted to make sure I had the same food. I realize he might not eat for a day or so. I have 9 tangs in the tank and have a a few clips of nori in the tank daily. I am sure he will join the crowd soon. Thanks for the help and the fish is absolutely beautiful.

Reeftanks6,

Thank you for your response. We would not recommend placing an Achilles or Powder Blue Tang in any aquarium less than 100 gallons. Keeping these fish in smaller tanks, even 90 gallons, may lower their chances of having a long and full aquarium life.

Reeftanks6,

Thank you for your post. With Tangs most of them do recommend being housed in a 100 gallon tank or more. However, after looking through the Tangs that we carry on our Live Aquaria website we do find some that can be housed in a 70 gallon tank.

Here is a list of a few tangs that can be housed in a 70 gallon tank:
Kole Yellow Eye Tang, Bristle Tooth Tomini Tang, Mimic Eibli Tang, Blue Tang, and the Convict Tang.

Along with the Tangs that we have listed above there are more that can be viewed at the link below:

Thanks for the reply. Ok this might be a bad decision but do you think that i can keep a PBT in there for 2 or 3 years and get him very small and when he gets to big then move to another tank. If i were to do this i would buy this tang from your site and some other things. This wont be for a little while though.

Reeftanks6,

Thank you for your post. If you were to add a Powder Blue Tang to a 90 gallon tank, it may outgrow it within a year or less. Also, it’s not just the size of the Tang that determines the tank size, but how territorial it can be. They require larger aquariums with many hiding areas and room to swim.

Reeftanks6,

Thank you for your response. The minimum tank size we recommend for the Purple Tang is also 100 gallons. We would not suggest entering this fish into a smaller aquarium. If you are interested in researching which Tang is best suited for your aquarium, you can find our recommended minimum tank sizing for each fish in our quick stats found on their pages.

Bad news...my achilles is all of a sudden covered with ich. Still eating well and I am soaking the food in garlic and vita chem. Will be ordering some selcon today. I can't pull the fish out to quaratine and it is a mixed reef. Any suggestions?

Charlie’s Angel,

Thank you for updating us on the acclimation of your Achilles Tang and we are sorry to hear that it is showing signs of Ich. We recommend slowly raising the temperature a couple degrees; however, it should not exceed 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and continue using your vitamin supplement. With more than one Tang in your aquarium, you may wish to watch closely for any aggression, which can result stress making the Tang susceptible to Ich. Even if before adding the Achilles Tang there was no visible aggression, there may be some now. Please keep us informed on the progress of your new addition. Could you also please PM us your order information so we may document your file to reflect your concerns.

Charlie's Angel I have had some luck using fresh garlic on a fine cheese grater and mixed with few drops of water to soak the food. If you are using a off the shelf garlic product it is missing the allycin (sp??) that is only obtained from crushing fresh garlic.

Some shredded garlic can be added to the water without harm, if the fish eat the actual garlic (not usually though) that's even better.

I will try the fresh garlic. Do you just get it from the grocery store?

Gwen - I do understand that excessive stress can make a tang susceptible to ich, however, no one has picked on the achilles. Only, the achilles and my fowleri show signs of ich. the fowleri has been with me for 3 months and nver before had any spots. However, they are both from the acanthurus family, so maybe they are a little wary of each other. I will send you a PM now.
