Acro bleaching

60 cube, 55 lbs live rock, tank running 6 months. Maxspect razor 120, have a variety of montis and 3 acros ( aussie acro, purple stylo, and wild millepora). A variety if Lps and mushrooms as well. This past week millepora colony started turning white and within 5 days the whole thing was white. Only had for 3 weeks or so. Had him near the top near light, run 45 percent white and 90 blue. 1.025 sg, 9 alk, 440 cal. Nitrates are high around 40.


New to sps, what would make this one guy bleach but the rest of sps seem ok? Should I be running higher percentage of white light instead of 90 percent?

Is it bleaching or did it have tissue loss?

If it's white skeleton, sorry it's not bleached it's dead.

Alk swings or other swings can often lead to this. It sounds like RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis). Also 40ppm nitrates seems high. With any light you need to photo acclimate your corals, maybe start them on the sand bed and move them up. I think your light setting s are fine, but with 40ppm in a 6 month old tank I think your tank may not be quite ready for touchy SPS. See if the nitrates go down over time. Keep testing you alkalinity and calcium on a weekly basis. When things are stable and in the range of what most consider acceptable then try a finicky sps. Remember as they grow you will probably need to supplement calcium and alkalinity in addition to your water changes. good luck!
