Acro Eating Nudibranchs

Let us now how it works out. Did you at least kill the nudibranchs?

Yes I was surprised at the reaction of the corals. LPS reacted by closing up too. Today everything looks good.

This is a year old 37 gal. frag tank. A research tank running NSW with a skimmer but no GFO or carbon. 3 Kessils and a Reefbrite XHO blue, PAR is 650 at the top and 250 on the sand. Corals are growing very fast and with great color.

The downside is that some corals heavily encrusted on the rock and I couldn't pull them to dip. So that's why I tried the FWE.

I don't see any today but I'll treat again in a week in case there were eggs. I think I'll go with 2X normal dose and let it go 6 hours before running carbon.

4 days after treating at 4X I still have Nudibranchs eating Monti's. They're as big as any of the ones I've previously removed so it would appear they survived and are not new ones from eggs.

I'm going to re-treat but not at the higher dosage.

I just had these on a new piece! What are the chances.. Hoping it did not spread to other corals!

Chances are very good they'll spread if you don't dip the coral you found them on.

The tank I have them in I'm tearing down. I can't dip some of the corals they're living on because they're heavily encrusted onto the rocks.

I did chop it off and through most of the colony out.. Hopefully it did not spread.. They def def were eating the coral.. I saw about 100 eggs and 10-15 nice sized nudis.. It was far from other corals.. All other corals have no signs.. I may run flatworm exit if I see anything strange...
They tore this piece apart by inches in days! Funny thing is I dip all my corals.. I must have missed the eggs.. I will prob never keep a bottom again, or at least I will cover the entire bottom w frag glue.. How long does it take for them to reappear? I'm pretty sure they didn't spread! We will see! I have a 7 x 3 ft tank, hopefully they will get lost! Lol
What is the difference between acro and monti eating???

I have encountered these on a large system recently.

Approx. 2 months ago I dosed 4x Flatworm Stop to the tank and then added carbon several hours later. This was repeated two additional times, each time after a 5-7 day period. After the 3rd dose all snails in the tank died and the tank went through a small cycle which had other very harsh effects, but thats not the main point of this post.

Yesterday I discovered more nudis and eggs on at least one coral in this tank. I took some photos as best I could with a 100mm macro lens (these are pretty damn small).

Two Nudis:

Eggs on the underside of an Acropora frag:

This frag had roughly 5-7 Nudis on it.

Plan of attack from this point onward will be dipping every single coral in this system on a weekly basis for at least 4 weeks. These nudis have a different size and appearance from monti eating nudis, but I using the monti eating nudi research to guide by approach. Currently looking into using Potassium permanganate as a possible dip.

As an aside, any acropora colonies which had acropora crabs on them appeared to be unaffected. The tank has several yellow wrasses and pipefish, but they likely do not provide enough "coverage" as this system is quite large.
