Acro experts...

white sponge it looks like. I have the same thing on a few rocks in my tank, although I dont know why it would grow on your acro? Was there algea or something in that area that started.

This looks like holes on the right side of the object in the zoomed picture, same exact thing as on the rock that I got from pet zone that came on a rock full of zoa's. Furthermore it has not caused any damage at all, but mine is about 20x the size of that.

Definitely not a sponge. I thought so too..until I poked it. It's hard....calcium skeleton hard.

Cutting it off would be a task. I would have to get the dremel out and try to cut the sections out. The coral is about 10" across and 8" high and the affected parts are buried pretty deep in the coral itself. It grows weird. All the branches interlocked with each other. Where 2 branches touched, they became one and kept growing.

Any idea on an id for it?

looks like it could be abrolhosensis, but I would need a picture of a tip close up. About a 3 inch branch should be sufficient to give a "good guess" anyway.

Its not a science without destroying a branch and looking at it under a microscope so it will only be a guess. Sometimes dead on and others way off. I hope that makes sense.

Get us a pick and we will take a look.
