I thought this would be a good place to start posting about all things related to the frags that we are all pitching in to buy. Hopefully we could start posting the amount available and people can start throwing ideas about corals that would be of interest. Hopefully everyone can get involved and we can start having a good resource to continually fund more coral buying and expand the corals in everyones tank.
This is a great place to start. As of the last meeting, several items were discussed for bringing to the group, items we would all like to have and see at the swap regularly. Because of the money and coral donations, we were able to start off pretty well for this being our first time. I certainly hope, as does everyone in the group, that we can keep this going to get those items sought after.
I think that if we each put in like $5 for the colony then we should be able to get one every other month or so depending on the price.
This of course, is dependent on the turnout and contribution. We decided to make it voluntary and up to ONLY $5.00 for
several reasons. I am as optimistic as you when it comes to purchases every month and we certainly hope this can be the case.
If its $3 then it is going to take 3 months and thats like only 4 year, which makes it hard if they are going to be fragged for others.
True, which is why it was set for $5 (not including the $2.00.) In other words, up to $5.00 (aside from coral or misc item donations for auction)can be donated per swap for ACRO coral purchases. We set this up because several people in the group have no coral to donate to auction at this time, thus giving them active participation in ACRO.
If we are going to make this work then we should solidly invest in it.
Absolutely. Which is why some of us (myself included) also donated corals and other items for auction and donated those sales to ACRO. We realize not everyone can donate auctioned corals at this point in time, hence the monetary donation(s).
I was also thinking that we should start a thread with candidates when there is enough money and people should be prepared to volunteer tanks to raise the coral.
These are things we would like to decide at ACRO meetings, though they can be lightly touched upon here. The reason being is because those of us who founded ACRO have a particular interest in having corals thrive that are purchased. Between those of us involved heavily with the leadership of ACRO who have stable systems, we can handle the raising of certain coral. The kinks are being worked out as we speak concerning the farming and caretaking of the coral purchases. Anyone who would like to be involved in raising corals can certainly volunteer. Not everyone will be able to do so for obvious reasons. If anyone in particular would like to, please let Tommy, Vince or myself know.
The only problem that I see is people are going to need good solid tanks with excellent water quality to be able to have the SPS grow and still have good color.
Yes, as outlined above
The coral should also be rotated, an SPS one month and an LPS the next and so on or we can do SPS or LPS or whatever multiple months in a row. If there is a particular coral that someone thinks is awesome then they should post a picture or link so others can get an idea of what might be good to order.
This will be done on a consensus so no one feels left out.
The biggest thing is I think we should all put forth a good effort to get the ball rolling in this. If we keep putting in only a few dollars at a time then I feel this is going to progress so slowly that people will lose interest. It might also get people to the meetings if they know a rare coral that would look awesome in there tank is going to be auctioned off. With all the money we spend on this hobby a few extra dollars a month shouldn't hurt anyone too bad. An active thread with the people who have the coral in there tanks might be cool too. The people could give updates every now and then to let others know when the coral might be fragged and how it is doing.
This is and has been a few of the ideas for ACRO since its inception.
BTW Matt, nice choices
