Acropora colony with smooth base?

I notice on a few of my colonies that the base now appears smooth? It still gets hit with light. The corralites appear to have become smooth and no longer bumpy. Hope someone understands what I mean without a picture. Thanks for the help.

it should not be a problem as long as it isnt bleaching

Nope not bleached, color is fine. Just wondering why its smooth on a few pieces that were once bumpy. I guess its normal

I have a few like that. I just chalked it up to something the base dose when the colony is getting big.

Most of the shaded areas become smooth because of atrophy/loss of polyp from combination of lack of light and flow. JME
