acropora frag bleaching

10 ppm? That's awesome lol I was freaking out about letting my nitrates get that high. I hadn't been testing simply because everything was looking great... guess that explains a lot :p

Yeah, I don't chase numbers. I do just what your doing by looking at coral and when things are growing fast and have great color I check #'s then try to keep them there.

I have been fighting STN as well. Interesting about the nitrates as everyone (well almost everyone) always says that SPS should have pristine water.
I think mine is a mariculture specimen as well...so another strike there for me.

Good luck with it! The parts that I fragged have STN at the base again.

I just had a red algae issue that was so bad I had to transfer everything from my 20 gal high to my 15gal and scrub my whole tank and add new sand.. I put the same water from my 20 in my 15 so I wouldn't shock anything and my metallic birds nest started bleaching on the bottom about 1/4 of an inch and my pocclipora started too on the tips of 3 branches... I don't get why.. I removed my t5 light and used only the LEDs since its much shallower .. Could that have done it?

My peice that looks identical to your did the same.. Rapid tissue necrosis matey.... Mine had gorilla crabs then got a second and found a clown Goby was having a munch too uploadfromtaptalk1428041811553.jpguploadfromtaptalk1428041811553.jpg

I dunno lol I'll probably get chased out of town with torches and pitchforks for saying this... but I don't test anything but alk, cal, and mag... as long as everything else looks happy, I leave well enough alone.

EDIT: hit send before I posted my original thought.
Has anyone tried an iodine (Lugals?) For stn? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it helped... theoretically it should, iodine promotes sick tissue death and healing of healthy tissue.

I tried iodine, Lugols to be exact, and I still have STN issues.

Just doing a lot of googling... there seems to be a few products that offer "remedies" for rtn/stn coral rx being a prominent one. I've never had any personal experience with any of them but it might be worth looking into. Good luck and keep us posted!

Coral RX did seem to slow the process, but never fully stopped it. I read that someone applied full strength around the edges of the STN. They used a q-tip dipped in Coral RX. Might want to try it. I'll give it a shot as well.

I have heard that when you get slow tissue necrosis you should try to cut off that part. Some have even suggested you can cut it then super glue the area to slow/stop the spread.

Yep....that's what I did when my bigger colony got it. Fragged it well above the diseased area. So far most of it seems to have worked. 2 parts that previously didn't have an issue but were fragged anyway are developing it.

I admit, I have had some pretty hefty alk swings. Having a hard time keeping it steady.
