acropora issue

one of my acropora's is receding from the bottom. I thought it was either not enough light getting to the underside of coral or it wasn't getting enough flow. I changed my bulbs a couple days ago and raised the current. I'm not sure if that was the problem ..... or maybe something else.

I noticed little white "droppings" on the coral last night where it still has it's flesh normal. My magnifying glass showed what looked to be "fan worms" or small feather dusters coming out of the coral. There seems to be at least 3 of these very tiny feather dusters coming out at a random pattern. I can't see anything else but the fans.

Could this be nudi's or some type of a acro eating bug? I have 2 other acro's starting to recede this morning. I don't see any feather duster fans on (in) them. It could be the bulbs weren't changed soon enough and I am still paying for it! I really don't think so. It makes me think I have picked up a "bad bug"! I have KM Lugol's solution. Should I dip the acropora's. Everything else in tank is just fine. Lots of new growth and good color on other SPS's.

Suggestions on what to do? I've never seen a feather duster in a coral only in rocks!

double ditto.

Hi Lloyd haven't seen you around for awhile

hey, Amy haven't seen YOU in a while either.

so the feather duster type animal inside the acro spitting white pieces of stuff ( must be guts/insides of acro) is not a problem?

I'm surprised no one addressed the animal I mentioned. This thing is busy!!! They (3) are located in seperate holes inside the coral. I see the fan come out, wave around and then little white droppings come from the small hole in coral. This evening when I got home there were even more droppings on all sides of coral. The white droppings are very noticeable against the lime green coral. I think it is being eaten from inside out. What else could it be but the coral being eaten from inside to produce the large amounts of droppings being dropped from this animal?

I'll check parameters but I don't believe it is the problem! I'll tell you tomorrow what my readings are!

For future reference, let's just say I have a "bad bug". What dips/medications do you recommend having on hand. I want to get in the habit of dipping every coral before introducing it in to my tank.

thanks for the help!

If your parameters are off quite a bit it will not matter by tomorrow. Btw, if it is a pest, there are basically two treatments to get rid of them:

1. Lugol's Solution or Tropic Marine Pro-coral dip for Acro eating flatworms and monti eating nudibranches.
2. Interceptor dog medicine for red bugs. Here is the kicker, you have to get this prescribed by a vet so good luck getting it.

There may be some others but those are the two most likely
used medicines I know of. Also any coral dip is most likely made from lugol's solution.

Yeah I've been kinda quiet lately.

Phil nailed it pests and control. In addition to TMP there is a new Sprung dip, Coral Revive, that is suppose to work on AEFW. Interceptor doesn't kill FW.
The animal sounds like some kind of spaghetti worm. Never heard of or experienced any coral damage from them.

In general tissue recession from the bottom up is related to inadequate flow, low or fluctuating alk or phosphate wicking. One sign of phosphate wicking is a green cast to the coral skeleton.
Tissue recession on the tips is related to alk burn (raising alk too quickly) or inadequate light acclimation. Can be a multitude of other causes too but these are the ones that quickly come to mind.
I'll check parameters but I don't believe it is the problem! I'll tell you tomorrow what my readings are!
Let us know what your usual parameters are too.
PH, alk, Ca, SG and temp.

If your water chemistry is good maybe check for stray voltage.

Hi Amy

I have still been around, I bit off a little more than I was prepared to chew with the SPS. A soft tank / LPS tank is pretty hands off as compared to SPS. My LPS trived with a little less care. I then started changing over to SPS dominate last summer, had a kalk snow storm, lost several SPS, we then had a baby = less time, tank suffered from neglect lost more SPS - got bummed with it.

And then kids use the PC with the 1package stored password, that I forgot so not much RC either.

Phillip has been helping me get it straightened back up recently, diverting the sell off or move to fish only, if we all had his dedication.

Hey Lloyd
Had a few minor/major disasters last year myself along with some kinda zoa eating pest. After moving the survivors to the nanos my tank is a fish only with palys and 'shrooms right now. Oh and Curt's indestructible galexea :D
Haven't done much with it except water changes since last winter. I'm slowly getting motivated to straighten it out now I just need to find some "disposable" income to dump in it.
Anybody have a job opening.

Congrats on the baby
