Acropora & seahorses

Hi guys,

Are Acropora corals safe with seahorses or not? I keep finding conflicting answers online and I'm just curious to see what you guys think. Thanks!!

This is more of a compatability thing than a 'safe' thing.

I dont think seahorses are compatible with SPS. The reason I say this is two-fold (one for each group):
1. SPS generally require very high random flow, and while SHs can handle higher flow than they are generally given credit for, they are not sustained strong swimmers and handle strong directional flow better than random flow.
2. It is as likely as not that the seahorses will decide that their favorite spot to hitch is on an SPS branch, which would likely cause the demise of the SPS.

IMO, mixing the two is pushing the boundaries of both species, unfair to both, and should not be done.

Interesting - what kind of coral do you have with your seahorses?

I keep leathers, a handful of different paly/zoas, and some select LPS that dont grow sweepers. If you think seahorse tank first and corals second while meeting the needs of everything, you are generally safe.

Hey buddy I'm interested in know a little more info about keep seahorse and corals, also what sizq should be appropriated for just one pair.

a little more than a month i bought my first seahorse, is a beautiful black female, also in the LFS told me than is a kuda, honestly I don't know to much about see the difference on each specie i saw online that kuda seahorses is big and the one that i have just reach 3" 1/2" for now, I'm trying to feed it with frozen mysis shrimp but is a little (picky" not sure if I write it right) and I feed it with live ghost shrimps, and live copepods I start to seed the littel tank that i Have with this pods to always have snack for her, cuz live ghost shrimps are a little hard to find sometimes. Also I'll like to buy a Nuvo 8 gallons tank to keep it in a little bit more space and water, I want to do a nice and easy to keep environment for her. that's why I will like to know what types of corals are good to keep with seahorses and types of light to not hurt the seahorse.

thank you very much..!

Well, for starters, the recommended tank size for seahorses like your kuda is 29g for a pair, with an additional 15g for each additional pair of seahorses.
Main reason for this recommendation is to maintain water quality so that you have less chances of the problems occurring due to the poor water quality that is prevalent with seahorse tanks due to their eating habits.
Picky is an excellent word for seahorses feeding off frozen foods as they only each the pieces that look good in their eyes, with some more picky than others.
For this reason, Uneaten foods that get trapped in hidden places provide food and bedding for the nasty bacteria that cause seahorses so many problems.
Then too, when seahorses snick their food, they masticate it, and then some micro particles are passed out through the gills into the water column.
Sometimes you can see this as it often shows as a "cloud" emanating from the gills. This particulate matter also degrades the water quality quickly.
There is a link to a "Tankmates" page, as well as links to other information regarding seahorse keeping at the bottom of "My Thoughts on Seahorse Keeping" written by experience keepers and an excellent breeder.

You most likely have a wild caught one or a tank raised one who wasn't trained properly onto frozen food.

Minimum tank size of 29 gallons with a flow rate to between 10 to 15 time the tank volume with areas of low, med and high flow rate.

T -5's works well or LED, but I do not know that much about LED to comment on them.

On Ray's link, it will link you to the org's tankmate guide.

Kind Regards,

Tim
