Activated Carbon and GFO

I use BRS stuff. I'm actually running low and need to order somethings from then. Maybe we can do a group buy if you're interested.

Rather than a group buy *if* it is just Carbon and gfo...I can get it bulk from BRS at a better price and we just weight and split...cheaper on both the product and shipping. Just a suggestion.

I need some RO/DI stuff as well. But bulk pricing is awesome though. I'm going to start a group buy thread to see if there's any interest, if not, maybe we can do a bulk order.

Just keep in mind one of the beauties of group buys is that BRS ships to your house...a bulk buy means you have to pick it up..so may not work for alot of folks. If you need more than the gfo then do a group buy.

That would be awesome Andy thanks so much. I was reading an article of Julian Sprung's and it just further confused me. He suggested I believe three tablespoons of carbon per 50 gallons........how long is that good for?

I know I want a gallon or two

I change mine monthly, And FYI you can reuse Carbon by spreading it out on some cardboard and letting it dry out. This opens the pores on it and you can reuse it this way. Maybe not indefinatly but a few times for sure.

I use 20 teaspoons in a BRS reactor and change it monthly, Reason being is because of the amount of SPS i have and they all send out chemical warfare against their neighbor's and the carbon gets that out of the water column.

BRS has an excellent guide to their carbon use. There are different formulations, shapes sizes, ect...surface area plays a big part too....but BRS always has great info.

Whatever carbon you use you want to make sure it doesn't contain phosphate by testing it yourself. Lots of brands, even some expensive ones, contain phosphate due to the manufacturing process. I like Marineland Black Diamond. I use Warner Marine phospar for GFO.

So another question. Ferric Oxide is the same thing as Rust is it not? It is the molecule Fe2:O3....there are a few types of Ferric Oxide ions from what I understand. So is GFO basically crushed up chunks of naturally occuring rust?

It is rust what the process to make GFO is i do not know? That old junker in the backyard my be a gold mine Ha.

Just an FYI for ULNS systems - on the Zeovit forum they recommend against BRS Rox .08 carbon due to it being too harsh. I think their next level down would be fine... of course they may be just trying to sell their brand.
