Added another maroon clown

In another thread I had said that after putting into my tank an RBTA and two non-paired yellow stripe maroons (two different sizes), the smaller one was chased around and the larger one hogged the anemone. The smaller one ended up on the carpet after jumping out. I found this out the next day.

I was thinking of getting a pair and returning the one fish, but when I went to the store today I saw a beautiful yellow stripe the size of a small dog. I figured there was no way the other clown was going to mess with this guy. The store owner said I can bring either one back if I had a problem.

So, I added the larger one to the tank (after I got him out of the net which he bit into). The original clown went up to him and did the submissive shimming thing. So far they are both next to each other and no problems. Of course it has been only an hour so I will have to report back an update.

The original clown is still going into the RBTA, and the new one is not. He is bigger than the anemone I think. I had also gotten a nice green BTA with purple tips on the other side of the tank yesterday but no one knows about it yet. Hopefully each one will take one, but who knows. In the 24 hours that I have the new nem, he went from the top part of the tank on the left side last night, to the other side of the tank (4 feet) ans down towards the bottom on a rock. He has been there all day so maybe he likes it there. I fed him 1/2 of a silverside with some selcon today and he ate it right up.

I have a question. how long was your original maroon in the tank before you added the small dog sized one?

see, the thing is, when clowns turn female, they stay female forever. and since it was beating up the smaller guy, that would be a big sign to me that it is female. if they start fighting baddly, you need to return one. and get the smallest tinyesy baby juvi you can. it took me months to find one. that will ensure it is still non sexed and will be the male

I hope the set up you have now works out though!! how big is the smaller one?

I know what you are saying and know this is a gamble. I am prepared to take one or the other back if I have to. The guy at the store mentioned about the female - female thing. The small one is about
1 - 1/4" The larger one is probably 3 1/2 to 4" and thick. He has big spines or tusks by his cheeks. I do not know if a smaller one will do it as this failed once already. Maybe need one even smaller than the one that jumped out of the tank if this doesn't work?

The smaller one has already been doing the submissive shimming thing with the larger one and following him around the tank. There is no way he will mess with the bigger one. Not sure about the other way around, but so far not an issue. The new fish did get the other one to finally venture out of his nem and around the tank. The original clown found the new nem and is going into it. He also is following the bigger one all around the tank. The newer clown hasn't shown any interest in the nems so far. I wonder how he will do as he has been in the ocean I'm sure for a long time and wonder how he will adapt.

Quick update. I just looked at the tank and the new maroon is in the new nem and loving it. Hope the nem does too. The original clown cannot stay away from the new clown. Hangs out with the new one by the new nem and then goes back and forth to his old nem.

Just to clear the waters, there have been reports or a female clown turning into a male. Just not common. FWIW

Just saw the smaller clown take off her bra and put on football cleats. LOL.

Now it's the next day and so far so good. I do wonder if the new fish will ever come out of the nem. By the way, when I had the original two fish, the smaller one would shimmy up to the larger one, but the larger one chased him away. It was amazing to watch the the remaining fish which was the bully, IMMEDIATELY shimmy up to the one I got yesterday. In addtion to this, it keeps following it around and then goes back to his own nem.

The new fish is awsome looking, and bigger than my sailfin and yellow tangs. It has to be 5/8" thick. I hope he makes it though. I have no reason to really think he wouldn't but I thought I read somewhere that smaller fish seem to adapt and do better. I could be (and hope) I'm mistaken.

if the small one submits its a male i have yet to see a clown vibrate and then decide that it really wants to be a female and stop vibrating you will know when it happens because the smaller one will be dead
good luck sounds like you will have a pair quickly i would bet that the size difference will convince the small one it is a male whether or not it is a female

Sounds promising! You have got to start referring to the bigger one as "she" and "her" though. When I paired my maroons, it took all of 10 minutes for them to sort things out (the male lost most of a pectoral fin in the process) but they've been inseparable ever since. I think you've got a pair since the female hasn't killed the little guy yet!

Well another 12 hours went by and no issues. They swim near each other sometimes but for the most part, they each stay in their own nem. The smaller will swim over to the larger one sometimes, but the larger one doesn't seem to like to move away from his nem.

Th new one ate today so I am happy about that. What would you feef a fish this size and how much? I am thinking pellets may not do it and maybe should gibe her formula one frozen? I gave him some frozen mysis shrimp just now.

How do I know if the nem is getting too much attention? For the most part he looks ok but some of his tentacles are not nearly as full as the other ones.
