Adding a few fish.

Hi guys,

I think it's about time to drop a fish in quarantine!

I'll give a little background on my tank: I have a 135g (may actually be a 125 but thats how AGA was marketing their tanks 72" x 24" x 18"). It just had its 6th birthday last month. Things had gotten a little messy while I was off at college, but I've spent the last three or four months doing some aggressive cleaning, maintenance, and upgrading and things are finally getting where I would like them. Now I just need to finalize what will be going in. Most of the fish I currently have, have been in the tank 5-6 years.

1 Sailfin Tang: The longest tank resident, perhaps a bit large for a tank this size, but he seems happy. Apparently the tastiest algae grows on the MP40, as he enjoys swimming right in front of it, even at full blast, and trying to get close enough for a nibble.

1 spotbreast/swallowtail angel: Started out as a female about 5 years ago, decided to turn male a couple years back. Good friends with the Tang.

1 maroon clown (Dona Corleone): Oldest fish in the tank. She's been in my tank for just over five years, but was living in a cousin's tank for 2 or 3 years before it got torn down. After a few splits there are four bubble tips spread through the tank, and Dona Corleone likes to split her time between all four. Currently in a turf fight with the mag-float.

1 Bi-color Blenny: Newest member of the tank. Was in an 8gallon cube that sprung a leak, but has been in the 135 for almost 4 years.

had a 6-line for about 5years, but went MIA sometime last year.

What am Considering (in order):

small maroon clown male-- hoping if I add this guy first Dona Corleone will be too busy to bother the other new additions. Either that or he will be last. I'm not sure if any maroon will work for a mated pair, or if I need to figure out where the first one came from.

3-4 Spotted/Pajama Cardinal fish-- I've always liked the look of these guys a bit more than the Banggais, but only if I can get them. Also afraid too many Banggais would fight.

3-4 Anthias-- Probably will go with Lyretail, but nothing is set in stone and I'm open to changing this idea.

1 female spotbreast-- Always thought the females were prettier than the striped males, and hopefully everyone gets along well.

some type of wrasse-- this one I'm not 100% on, but I find wrasses to be colorful in both personality and scales and would like to add one at some point. My pod population is pretty low right now from when I had a 6-line, and I want to wait for the new refugium to repopulate before adding a wrasse. May substitute for a mandarin, but that's a tough call. As a passive fish I would want to add it early, but I don't want to add it till the pod population has had a few months to grow.

I plan on quarantine everyone for about a month if they don't show problems.
Since I only have one tank for quarantine (I think it's a 30), every species would go in about a month apart or so.

What does everyone think? Too much? Wrong order? And now I have "Dream Police" stuck in my head, only as the Tank Police...

Found the answer to one of my questions. If a ORA can breed (even if on accident) a hybrid maroon and ocellaris, then any variation of maroon should be ok together I guess.

An established, mature female maroon is about the most territorial fish I know of. She likely considers the entire tank her territory and could easily wage war on any newcomer; especially another clown. Years ago, I had a female maroon kill another one while it was still in the lfs bag. You really can't tell male maroons from females until they mature and pair up. A "time-out" often works with mature clowns; QT the new one, then put the established clown in the QT for a week or so before re-introducing it. May or may not work. Also, IMO & IME; 4 weeks is not enough QT time. I think 6 weeks, minimum, and really prefer 8.

Shouldn't a small enough clown be a male? From my understanding, all clowns start male, and eventually turn female if they are alone when the settle, or the largest fish when they move. Will too young of a male fair poorly? Yes I bet she thinks the whole tank is hers, but there has to be some way to get around that. Perhaps taking her out for a while would work. Is she going to be too much of a problem when adding other fish? I guess I could find somewhere else to keep her while adding new fish.

My post above was confusing; they are males until maturity starts. I'd sure have a place to put your female---they will go after ANY fish they consider a territorial threat.
