Adding a French Angel

I think that you will need to re-arrange your rockscape to have your new FA accepted.

Maybe you should find a smaller one to have easier time to get used to your fishes. After a period in adaptation vessel or tank as some experts do in here and have shown pictures in RC.

In captive, FA do grow fast until a size...like 8 inches ..them will start to grow slowly ...so may not be that bad idea like ...but really should be concerned about your tang manners...

I had the same question about a year ago... IMO there are a lot of very nice looking angels out there that would suit your tank better than a french. Have you looked into getting an annularis angel (that is what I got when I realized a french would probably be too big for my tank)?

IMO A French Angel at 12-15" should really have a 30" or wider tank. I have an 11" queen angel in an 8' x 30" long and that seems to suit him but my 14" yellowfin tang is pushing the limits and at times looks out of place when he turns around. Once the fish reaches 1/2 the width of the tank the fish starts to seem a little cramped (unnatural when it turns). You would probably want a peninsula style aqua scape so the fish can swim on both sides but the 24" width limits the space.

I saw a wild french snorkeling about a year ago and it had the most amazing yellow colors. I instantly wanted one and started searching rc. All of the ones I see in captivity (even at public aquariums) look very drab in comparison so make sure you look at some pictures of ones in people's home aquariums. I only mention this because if your LFS just brought this fish in it may loose some color over the years. (I have not owned one so I can't be certain but something that should be considered).

The purple tang may present some problems but introduce your fish with the lights off in an acclimation chamber and you should be ok.

If you decide to get one, I would consider getting a 1-2" fish. That way you can grow it out and have it for a longer period of time. Make sure you qt and treat for flukes. I always make sure my fish are fat, and aggressively eating in qt. That helps them deal with the other fish when they are introduced into the display tank.
 
a 2" FA, roughly how long are you looking at til it is 10-12"? usually fish growth slows down a good margin when they are about 7". would it be a stretch to say about 4-5yrs to go from 2" to 10"?
 
I looked at other angels like the Goldflake angel, but the cost is outrageous. I really like the French Angel, but I worry about how big it will get. Heck, if I can keep it alive for 4-5 yrs starting from a small specimen, I think it'll be worth getting a larger fish tank down the road. LOL. I always QT all my fish regardless who I get them from...Prazipro is my friend. I never had one of these angels before but I can guess that it'll take many years for it to get to 12".
 
Another member had a 13'' french forsale that he has owned for 10 plus years. Mine has raced from 4'' to 8'' in about a year and has really slowed these last months. Go get your French angel, cheap as far as big angel go and very hardy.

How big is your tank?
 
My tank is a 8ft 420g. Your french will great in your 240g if he gets to large for your tank in 6 years trade him for a juv or something.
 
Good point. 420 gallon seems large...do you think you can keep your French Angel for a very long time in that tank? If anything I can upgrade to a tank size like yours and still keep my same footprint length-wise.

To be honest I'm not sure why that matters. Unless at some time he realistically plans to have an obscenely large tank, there are much more suitable angels that you can comfortably house for their entire lifespan in the tank he currently has.

That's just my opinion though. Obviously he is entitled to do whatever he wants. I was just pointing out that French Angels grow to be massive, and I linked the video to put it into context relative to other very large mature fish.
 
Great video, and I agree with stumped. Imagine a 13" tall french angel (or more) in a 24" tall tank, that is only 24" wide...
 
Alright...what kind of Large Angel do you think I can add to my mix? Here's my stocklist:

Majestic Angel (4")
Purple Tang (3.5")
Male Lyretail Anthias x 1 (3")
Female Lyretail Anthias x 3 (2")
Midas Blenny (2")
Mystery Wrasse (3")
Blue Tang (1.5")
Clown (1.5")

Any other type of fish you guys think I can add? Bluethroat Trigger??
 
If it does survive and get to be 10"+, you can always upgrade, or sell it back to the LFS. At least you would have enjoyed having the fish for 4-5yrs.

About 10yrs ago, my sister and her husband had their 3rd child despite only living in a 2 bedroom apt. Sure 5 grown adults wouldnt be suitable for the 2 bedroom apt, but that didnt stop them from having their 3rd child. 5yrs after that, they're a big happy family in a 4 bedroom house.

LOL! I like your analogy..

I went back to the LFS and the French Angel is more like 5". Still bigger than my current fish. I'll give it some time...it's been there for 3 weeks already and it's a nice specimen full of color. I've been tracking it for a week. Eating everything, but pellets. Not scratching on rocks, no cloudy eyes, no growths on its body. Fins are intact. It's probably not a good idea to pick it up, based on what the majority is saying. But if I can keep it for greater than 5 years - I'm upgrading my tank for sure!!
 
Sounds like a good fish, go get him and just keep him as one of your little secrets just wait until he swims behind some rocks for a FTS..lol . He will be a nice fish in your tank for a long time.

I would rather it go in your tank then some newby with a 55 that thinks it looks cool.
