adding another clown

I have had two clowns for around 3 years now and one died about 6 months ago. I have tried adding another clown 2 times now only to have mine nip at it and stress it to death. Any opinions on what to try?

Few questions:

What kind of clown do you have?

Is the survivor a female?

How did the new clowns you tried to introduce vary in size compared to your existing fish?

How big is your tank?

Well, if survivor wasn't already female, it most likely is by now.
I'd get a small clown, about 1" or so, and intro in a specimen container.
Might need to float that a couple days, should be able to tell if existing clown is curious or furious.

Well I have bought ones that were approx the same size. I'd say the one I still have is a female also. Tank is a 28 gallon jbj. She is a ocelleris

Same size could turn out to be an issue. In 6 months time she has turned female most likely. You might end up with 2 females which would be bad news.

I asked about the type of clown because maroons and tomatoes are notoriously difficult to pair. Ocellaris are generally not. Of course, you could have the exception to the rule.

As others above have said, buy one that's much smaller. A critter-keeper is a good idea.
