Adding another clown

Thanks for your time.

I lost one of my two ocellaris clowns about 3 months ago. The female was picking on the male pretty good(tattered fins, poor color, not allowed to eat). I panicked and moved the battered clown into a qt to try to let it get its strength back. It died in QT that night. I think between the battering the female gave it and the stress of moving it into qt proved too much.

I want to add another ocelaris. The one that remains in my tank is most certainly a female now right? If I get a small ocellaris - is it possible to introduce another clown to this existing one? Please give me odds on my success. I'm thinking about adding a black ocellaris - will this make matters any more difficult? I would like them to pair and possibly breed. I'd hate to have to get rid of the one I already have. I'm fond of her. ;)

well if it killed it then you might have had 2 females...the female will normally just become dominent over the male, and then they're good...but if it actually killed it...that leads me to believe they were both females...

And yes, i would believe that the one in there is a female...you want to get a pretty young clown at this point...one that will still be a male (do you know how they switch sexes, or would you like me to explain that as well?...i type a lot sometimes lol...so for the sake of this post, i wont put it.)

but you'll want a fairly young one to be sure its still a male, then you should be fine...as far as adding a different color, i think you can do it, but i've heard otherwise too i think...but after all...where did we get all the weird morphs? So i'd wait for someone who knows for sure before you buy a black one

yes, blacks will pair with orange clowns. whatever color you choose be sure to get the smallest one you can. this will give you your best chance

If your local LFS gets blacks in they would be straite from ORA and should all be juvi's still. And yes they will pair with regular occ. color does not matter at all. If they get a bunch dont get the largest one, smaller is better but not teany tiny, that could cause problems with a bully female too. (Taken from personal experience)

Thanks for your posts...

sir_dudeguy - I know about the clown's birds and bees. ;)

I'm pretty sure my previous pair had established their roles - one male, one female. They were larger than the typical juvis you see at the LFS and one was already noticeably getting larger than the other.

I'd be ordering a clown online.
