adding liverock

IME, unless it is cooked it will cause some mini spikes. It all depends on how well cured and how much you add. With decent cured LR, a few water changes would be fine to keep levels down.

The stuff at your LFS is most likley cured and you should have no worries. Just ask if it's cured, and if they don't know what your talkling about then find a new LFS..

it depends, when i moved mine over from my other tank i had a mini cycle and lost some fish, just keep some amquel on hand incase somthing spikes

What about transfering rock from a friends established tank into your current tank to supplement the aquascaping...would there be any cycling/spiking?

Assuming that the rock is out of water for a neglibable (minutes) amount of time...there should be no die off, right?

For example, I have a 65 gallon with ~ 40 lbs and will be adding ~ 60 lbs from a guy who is breaking down his tank. Can I introduce htis directly into my system or should I let it cycle in a seperate tank first?

Thanks...

yes you can since its from an established tank. the rock can handle being out of the water for a while if need be. a lot of reefs are exposed to the midday sun at low tide for hours.

There are two factors you should consider:
1. The amount of rock you are putting in compared to the size of the tank and the amount of rock you currently have, and
2. The fact that live rock at your LFS may or may not be "cured," regardless of what they tell you.

Thanks for the reply. So in my situation, if I were adding about 60 pounds of cured rock, that has been in another persons reef tank for about 1 year...

into my 65 gallon tank that currently has about 40 pounds of rock...

would I run into any issues?

Thanks...

I feel the most comfortable adding LR from a fellow reefers tank that is beautiful and purple totally coraline covered, as you KNOW that it is fully cured.. I would not be worried about it.
