Adding rock

Got a a couple pieces of rock from lfs that was closing. Same store that saved our tank from a total disaster. Been going well for about 6 months. The rock was dry when purchased. Looks like some sort of dead coral. Sat out in open inside house by tank water jugs. Added last night, this am our torch and hammer didn't seem to open up very much. Also have a tuxedo urchin doesn't seem well. Have a bta and carpet as well as zoas, star polyps, shrooms, clam & elegance all of which seem fine. Could the rock have caused this somehow?

The rock could have had some locked-up nutrients and die-off in it, and might trigger a tiny cycle, depending on how much rock it is compared to your tank size. I wouldn’t worry too much. Give it a couple days and keep an eye on them.

Assuming it was clean dry rock its highly unlikely that its to blame..
If it had a bunch of dried "stuff" on it then there is a small possibility that it may be causing some changes in the tank.

I'm not sure how you judge the health of an urchin other than its just not moving as much or its losing spines.. But they routinely just sit in one spot if they want to.

IMO all just a coincidence..

A somewhat remote possibility could be that the rock was exposed to copper at one time, which could cause the die off.

yeah used rock is like used anything really ... no telling what and or how it was used before so .... with used rock its always a toss up as far algie hitchhikers and or anything else you may or may not want
