Adding sand to tank

What would be the best way to add sand to a running tank. I would like to make a deeper sandbed just do not want a disaster in the process of doing so. Anyone have any tips on what to do?

Maybe take a large cylinder like a section of 3" pvc and dump it down that then slowly lift the cylinder out? Or place it carefully with a container to minimize how much clouding you get.

Shouldn't create too much problem even if the water gets very cloudy for a day or two. Just a little storm on the reef...

That would be a good idea. After you pour it down the 3" PVC, siphon out the water of the PVC so you'll remove all the loose debris, then lift the PVC out of the tank.

Thanks the pvc sounds like a good idea. I tried some with just a cup and did it slowly and the "storm" was not too bad. Ill try the rest the way you guys mentioned maybe it will work better.

I've found the easiest way is to put the sand in a platic bag, take all of the air out of the bag, lower it by hand to the bottom of the tank and then slowly cut a hole in the bag with a knife. Let the sand slowly "drain" of the bag.
