Adding Substrate for Wrasses?

Has anyone had good results with adding a section of smaller substrate to a tank so that wrasses would have a more comfortable area to sleep? Did the wrasses actually use it? Is it worth adding? (I'm not liking the idea of fully replacing all the substrate - tank is established, large, and it's too much work)

I'm looking to add some Halichoeres spp. wrasses in the future. Current substrate in the tank is probably ~1-1.5mm diameter and 2-4" thick. My thought is to add some smaller grain sand (<1mm) to a couple regions of the tank that would be easier for the wrasses to burrow under. Thoughts? Suggestions on depth?

Thanks!

Additional info:
-The powerheads rarely create any sandstorm, so I'm not too nervous about adding smaller grain for that reason.
-Tank is very large, so I could easily do a couple 12"x12" sections.

I've kept Leopard's, but had a 6 - 7" DSB of sugar sized Oolitic substrate. I know of a couple other reefers who used Caribsea's Special Grade, which is advertised @ 1 - 2 mm who keep burrowing wrasses. So, at 1 - 1 1/2 mm you should be fine. When I QT the wrasses I would place a Glad container in the QT tank half filled with oolite for them to sleep in, and just place the lid on the container and transfer the container with fish to the DT when the QT process was complete. If you chose to do it this way, you could just leave the container in the DT for a while to see if the fish continues to use it, if so, maybe just bury it enough to disguise it. Here is what I did in QT:

Agree with evolved, sand is fine. I'm using the special grade with my leopards and no issues after 3 years.
