Adding substrate

I got some pulverized limestone i want to add to my tank. My question is do i just wash it and pour on top of the live sand already in my tank and mix it up?

wash extremely well.

place in ziplock baggies (or any bag) and lower to the bottom, with the opening facing downwards. Gently let it pour out very slowly. Very slowly, Very slowly...get the idea?

Should not cause too much of a sand storm. Let it sit a few days and slowly spread it out.

If you do that, i could almost guarantee you'd get a nitrite spike. I hear it's best to add small amounts over time, somebody else please correct me if I'm wrong here.

hmm, paul types faster than I do, I'd listen to him before listening to me though, he's got more experience.

From what I have heard it is very important to add it in depths of no more then about 1/2 inch at a time. You don't want to kill off all the stuff in your sandbed and recycle your tank. That would be bad....
