adding to substrate

I currently have a black gravel substrate similar to this "Black Beach Gravel #2"

I think I want to just add the live aragonite I'm gonna get from BMcCoy to it, will this work? or should I remove the black beach gravel altogether?

personally, I would remove old and go with the new. you can add it, but eventually all the larger kernels will work their way to the top and the sand to the bottom.

Ive added aragonite to similar beach gravel with no problems. The larger gravels will slowly rise to the top, but it wasn't ever a problem for me.
