If you add more water to your system it essentially is like a water change so it will help. The major point of a sump is to add volume so that it will make it more stable.
You want to make sure you don't overfill your sump in the process... ie: power goes out how high will the water go?
As long as you are not creating a water hazzard any water you add to your system that is cleaner than your current water will make the water in the system cleaner overall. You do want to keep an eye on salt level obviously though.... if you keep adding saltwater they will go up.
I don't think everyone uses sumps to add system volume strictly, but they are nice for that. The main reason I use sumps is to put that annoying equipment in.... protein skimmers with 8" bodies don't look nice in your tank. Also a nice place to store those piles of macroalgae... =)
