adding water

I just top off manually as I have one of those "all in one" tanks. I use deionized water.

Lately I have been topping off with salt water because I was keeping my salinity at 1.023 and was told I should raise it to 1.025, so when I would top off, I would use the salt water to gradually raise it.

But, remember when you're topping off that salt doesn't evaporate, so you don't want to top off with saltwater unless you're trying to raise your lvl. But, if you're replacing water that your skimmer pulls out, then you want saltwater because the skimmer is using saltwater. Someone posted that piece of advise a few days ago....now I know why my salt lvl was dropping! LOL!

Alright so it is fine to do it manually, eventually I will look into an automatic thing that does it, but for now I just wanted to make sure it's fine doing it manually.....

also I was wonderign what exactly is a water resevoir... like how do they work and all?

I'm sure it's fine to do it manually, if it's something that you check daily. The only problem I think, may be with a larger tank, is when you top off, if you don't put in what evaportated, meaning the same amount of water, then I'm not sure what effect it would have on your salinity, etc.

Because I have the BC, I don't believe there's any way to hook up an ATO to that, so I've never even looked into it. The side of BC has a water line marker, marked min and max. I used a silver Sharpie and marked where my water level should be. When it gets below that line, I fill it until it hits that line. But again, with my closed system, I don't see much evaporation at all, especially not on a daily basis.

I'm thinking that you should be fine IMO. From what I've read, it seems OK to do it manually, as long as you pay attention to it.

There several way to top off ATO or manually. I mark my sump where I like the level to be. I just used deionize water to fill it up to the level. You don't need to add salt because only H2O evaporate not salt. Just check your PH and ALK to make sure it has not change. I'm about to set-up my ATO w/ kalkwasser to make life alittle easier. I'm sure everyone have their own way.
