Addtional fish thoughts

Looking for some input for my 180

Currently have the following

Pink Tail Trigger

Naso Tang

Both are about 6 to 7 inches in size currently. What would yall recommend based upon that as for I don't really want to make on the spot purchases if you know what I mean.

I have always loved Niger Triggers. If you've got a ton of rock and hidey holes you might be able to have a couple of pigmy Angels too.

Wont the angels eat coral?

I also have a Niger trigger but not in this tank he is in my 275 gallon tank in my office.

Pygmy angels are never a good choice if picking at corals is a problem. If you want angels get them as small as possible before they develop a taste in the wild for corals. I would suggest a Quoyi parrotfish, Regal angel, Bellus angel or any of the Roa complex butterfly's (Tinkeri,Declivis, Mitratus, ect)

Wow. So much to chose from.

How about what NOT to get? Fish I regret getting:
- 6 line. Found out late that there are so many other better looking docile wrasses out there, but could not get them due to the 6 line
- hippo tang. Not friendly to most other fish, as crazy as Dory in the movie.

Beyond that, it's a matter of taste. Fish I like:
- I just love tangs. I had 4 at one time, just bought 2 new ones for a revived tank. My favorite was a naso, ate right out of my fingers, would perform tricks when I came to the tank. But, you already have him. Wheteher you can have more tangs or not depends on how territorial your tang has become.
- Schooling fish, like cardinals. I had pajama cardinals. Nice to see them just floating in a group in a large tank.
- Mandarin, blue. I have a soft spot for mandarins.

Not ready for a Mandarin just yet in this tank it would not have enough to support his needs. I wory about smaller fish in general with the size of the pink tail. I feel he can be a little aggressive at times.

They had a nice yellow tang about the same size as the NASO I almost think I messed up and should have grabbed them both so they went in at the same time.

Depends on if he wants to add another "dirty" fish. What I mean by that is a messy eater/high waste producer

Why is always a catch with the best looking / exotic / interesting fish?

Puffers = Not reef safe, messy, hungry
Tangs = Need too much space, aggressive, ich prone
Butterflies = Eats corals, delicate, picky eaters
Orange spotted Filefish = eats only SPS (unless trained)
Tomato and other good looking Clowns = aggressive
Damsels = aggressive
Chromis = dies / kills other chromis
...

sorry not to hijack the thread :)

The pink tail will make it difficult to add small fish maybe add another tang or two. Hogfish like a lyretail or peppermint would work. Maybe put the pink tail in your other tank for a while to add some small fish.

IMO, every salt tank needs to have a pair of clownfish.

I don't see the two fish you have as preventing much,if any, choices on your new fish. So from that perspective, get what you like.

I highly recommend an isolation tank for introducing new fish. Since I started using one, every new addition has been mostly ignored once it's added to the main part of the tank. And I have a 6 inch Vlamingi, 6 inch hippo, and 5 inch yellow tang as long time residents.

Big puffer fan. Mine is fine except I can't keep shrimp and he occasionally picks off snails. Never touches coral. Wonder if you could find one already living in a reef tank that someone is looking to get rid of.

Can you explain the isolation tank? Thanks guys for the feedback

It can be done several ways. I take the largest plastic critter keeper I can find, about 2-3 gallon size, and drill lots of additional holes in it. Then i hang it on the inside of the tank so it fills with water. Put the new fish in it, along with some hiding places. Let sit for about 3 days. This lets your old fish see the newcomers, but any attempt at aggression is thwarted by the critter keeper cage. By the time you release the new fish, most of the old fish already accept them as part of the tank or are tired of failing to get at them.

I've done this many times with only minimal aggression from the old fish.

OP. Did not know tank was a reef so no Angels. If you don't jntend to have small fish a Marine Betta is very cool. Another is a Ribbon Eel.

This isn't always he rule but there are are plenty of fish within the types that wouldn't work for specific reasons
