PAR Readings

PAR Readings

So got my grubby paws on a PAR Meter, readings were taken around 11:30am.

I installed 40% blue ChromatiNet shade cloth yesterday....will see what gives in a months time around color changes. Readings astounded me partly because of the shade cloth and the filthy polycarb roof, still allowed enough PAR for my set-up.

When the sun was at it's clearest the reading alone in the sun room was around 1200!...I compared this to my 250w BLV globes about 30cm away with only clear air between the bulb and the sensor and I only got around 280

The pic below ilustrates more or less what the readings averaged around. At 8am this morn, the readings were about 300-400 less than whats shown.

So, I cleaned my glass, noticed in the process that my chromis had laid (lots) of eggs. Mommy was dive bombing my scraper in the process and fish were scooping up what was left. Seeing they did this in my other tank as well, took them a relatively short time to settle into their new home.

Also installed my CARX unit last week, (Reef Octo CR-3000) looks like I may finally have it dialed in. Will see what gives over the next couple of days. This evening was the first time I did not have to re-dose the tank before going to bed. Just so you know what I was dosing manually: Tropic Marin Bio Calcium, 14 scoops a day. Or around 350g of Calcium Chloride Dihydrate to top things from 350ppm back up to 400ppm daily. So the reactor is filled with 10 Kilos do Brightwells Ca media and 1.5kg of their Mg media.
Ca = 420ppm
Mg = 1410ppm
Alk = 9 dKH

Most of the corals have started to literally all bud at the tips, hope to now see their growth accelerating. They have stabilized to their new home, and sunny conditions, very nicely.

Man what a difference it makes, can't understand how I managed to keep the tank bare bottomed for so long. Added my colt and bubble coral as well, they happy in their new home. Don't mind the frags, just a reminder to me that I must round to sticking to the rocks...some where.

nice setup . you can't beat the sun . the corals look amazing with the natural light . are you colecting the corals locally ? the tank looks so much better with the sand .

Thanks. Nope not local collected (illegal), got most of them as frags from fellow reefers.

Excellent and very different!!! Makes for a unique fts with sunlight.

Scape etc look great! Will be awesome as the colonies get bigger!

Its going to be soon one of the best tanks in South Africa. I like the new look with substate and rock stucture, well done man.

Beautiful setup. I love everything about it, really! Have any pictures of your roof-line showing how sunlight is getting in? Is it just panes of glass up there or did you use solar tubes?

Thanks. Actually I'm using twin wall clear polycarbonate (8mm) panels. I've recently covered it up with 40% blue shade cloth.

What a great set-up!

I'm impressed by your low profile overflow on your frag tank. Is it noisy at all set up like that? Also, won't it be difficult to clean inbetween? Or do you plan to let it algae over?

All round fantastic build, I'd like to do something similar in the future with natural sun light.
