Adee's new build

Doing well thanks, getting good growth. I'm having to feed these coral as I have no fish life bar one lawn mower blenny. Nutrien levels very low.

Suprisingly much of the growth tips of corals are blue instead of white, as in my other lighted tank.

October Update

October Update

Well forget about spring, summer was here today....hot as hell...thought I take some snaps while getting some sunburn. Of course, a few beers did help keep things cool :D

The nursery tank was hovering around 30 degrees, the ATO was working overtime as well. I need to get to building that scrubber which also will help on providing some cooling...as well as to move on transplanting the rest of the livestock from my other system so that I can move the chiller as well.

Some of the bigger ones that I have moved already into their temporary accommodation

Some frags, mostly pieces I'm gonna add onto my new display tank. Others are left overs from some bigger colonies that were hit with RTN a few weeks back.

my make shift holding cell for the macro algae. I have 6 types growing there, seemingly some die back on the chaeto..nutrient levels are very low...but that will soon change.

So I need to to still get the main display ready.....slowly filling up with RO water. Then turn the tap that will link the two systems together. Then the aquascaping will begin...I really need to get this right this time.

here she is is half full.

Then I still need to move all this from the other tank, coral are growing on the front pane, as well as tips out of the water....still got some time to go before I can move them though.

I added a pair of inmates, to help boost the nutrient load and to do a good job on munching the algae and keeping things clean.

Really interesting setup! Wouldn't it just be a joy to have an outdoor sun room like you have to have the tanks!! Natural sun light will be fantastic to watch how your corals color up.

Thanks mate. Having kept a "lighted" tank for 8 years or so....this is really new territory for me. Learning as I go along.

I would encourage anyone who has the space and room for it, to do the same.

here's a pic posted early on this thread....the pic was taken on the 18th July:

this one 4th August, 18 days later!

As a gauge, the marble plug in 2cm wide...I've got 3-5mm growth on the base in just 18 days.

same frag today, 4th October

Houston we have lift off

Houston we have lift off

Well finally plumbed the DT setup with the nursery tank. I swear I had to try and defy the laws of gravity with the plumbing over flows.

Switched on the BB5000 as well, took about 4 days to dial itself in. So now total volume in this set up is 2600 litres. I have yet to move my chiller, got hold of a sparky today to redo some electrical work to the DB board in readiness to move the chiller. Going to have to sacrifice heating rather in my other tank, still got to move other corals from there as well.

With summer practically already started, temp swings are 24 to 35 degrees currently. I bought two new digital thermometers who now give the same reading, the original normal mercury one was off by 4 degrees!

So started pruning the corals in my existing tank in preparation to moving them to this system. I found some pics of the original frags (exactly 2 years ago) that I got from Gixx (The Legend).

So the plan is to move large frags rather than whole colony (help limit the risk)...I moved two big frags of this one to my sunlit set-up and kept the rest in the existing tank. Will monitor over the next few weeks as the sun and water temp are giving the corals a hiding....no sign of RTN yet so far so good.

Here is the other one, a green blue-tip...by far my fastest grower...tried to cut it out in one go, ended up breaking in three big pieces.

Going to get some 40% shade cloth and cover the roof....the corals I have in my frag holding tank are taking strain and summer season here has not even started.

You are making fast progress. I like the way you moving the corals across to the new tank limiting the risk of losing your large corals. Will a large aircon work in the room to keep the temp stable? I will be folowing closely as once the main tank running Im going to pay a visit.

Thanks Suhayl... need to pick up the pace but with cooling being a big concern (water temps gotten up to 40 degrees C) I'm need to sort that out first.

Actually I had an aircon guy here and thought moving the 12000BTU unit from the lounge would suffice...he reckoned that I would need at least a 24000 BTU unit. Lets see what shade cloth and more fans will do, to help out.

Thanks guys, yep these are going to seed my sunlit rimless set-up I got going in my sun room.
My current tank (of eight years) housing these colonies will unfortunately be shut down one of these days...

small update

small update

Hope fully this weekend can do some work on the tank's rock work.

This is how things look currently. Still need to work around the space that the CLS piping takes up in the tank. The corals are from my other tank, these are "testers" and seem to be doing well. I've had bigger colonies react worse than smaller finger size frags of the same species...so doing things in stages for now.

DSC02572.jpg

Hopefully the next update I will have the rock work all done and then its a matter just gluing the sps to the rock.

DSC02573.jpg

I've also just introduced Ozone, water is a bit clearer than before...also need to start running carbon.

I've added 40% shade cloth that covers overhead, the shallow nursery tank. Also added a much better fan (on left)....much more better than the one normal house fan on the right. Thanks to Robvdv for the ideas on cooling.

DSC02579.jpg

The fan is on a timer (6:30 till 17:30). I need to run it rather off a temp controller linked to the tanks water temp reason being, on some rainy miserable days (when I'm not home), it can drop the temp to below 22deg.

Taken yesterday at 4pm, much better than around 32 on some previous days at that time....will check this weekend what its like at noon...
DSC02581.jpg

Its amazing to see the the wildlife I've got going in the sump...in such a short space of uptime.

DSC02583.jpg

Will post more as i go along, want to move the two glass (200L) reservoirs outside and build a little shed for them this weekend...better to have them in the shade.

The dt finally filled up, you must be happy. I will probebly come have a look in week time and also come pick up my tank. The fans really help with temperature even on the hottest days. When I was running my 2x400w halides I ran one of those fans to blow over the water surface which kep temp around 25 to 26 degrees. Eveporation is just going to be much more.

Been running the DT for about a month now....will pick up the pace of the build now that the temp is more stable, need to add another fan as well....fish will go in last.
