Hi group
I was given a clam by my friends wife, long story dont ask.
Not sure what kind it is other than purple and about 6" long (still trying to determine through forum).
I have on a curved piece of live rock sitting nicely, (in case I have to move it) clam has secured itself. I have directly under a 150 mh in the upper 1/4 of the tank. What is odd is when I look down on it beautiful purple and blues, when I look at it at an angle I see a brownish tinge to the purple. Not sure if this is a concern or not. As noted above I have it in the top 1/4 of the tank, the light is 6" above the water surface and clam is 9-10" below the surface of the water. Not sure if this is too close or not and I know its a hard call not knowing what type it is.
I have gotten very attached to it, the show piece of my tank.
Clam seems happy, not gaping kinda does his thing. Tank specs
125g, CA450ppm, 0 nite/am, ph 8.4, temp up to 80-81 in heat of the day (getting a chiller this week) Lights 10k mh 300 w total, and 240w of actnics. Hints appreciated

No worries about teh different colorations depending on how you look at it. When you look down on the clam, you are seeing the reflections in the mantle that assist the clam feed photosynthetically. When you look at the clam from side you are seeing it simply from a different angle. They are all like that. Not sure what kinda clam it is without photographs, but post some and you will get an answer quick.

As for placement, that really depends on the type of clam so pictures would be of great help in that regard.

From your description, it sounds like a Crocea. In my Very top down pictures I see electric blue but from the side brownish purple

It could be anything, without seeing a picture.

All corals and clams look better from above, which is one of the reasons that most online stores take topdown photos. It kind of isn't fair to unsuspecting buyer who expects they will look the same from the side.

Thanks guys I will try and get a pic posted to get your input on location, type etc. The wife had no clue what kind but didnt want it to die.

Update, looks like clam is a crocea, and has been doing well until yesterday when he clammed up (pun intended) He has been pretty much closed up, open about 1/4" nothing changed except I adjusted a powerhead but he is out of the main flow and tank temp is running right at 80 a bit warmer than usual. Not sure why this happened, may be he/she is just adjusting.
My question is how long before I should start worrying? I will search the forum for other causes. Thanks for all your help

Are any of your fish picking at it? Is its inhalent siphon (the big hole that it pulls water into) wide open or does it look normal. The clam could be gaping. Is there any way you could post a picture?
