Advanced skimming questions... I think

Ok, here is my issue if this is the right place for it. I have a asm g3 skimmer on a 50/50 sps/lps system of 75g dt and 15g sump. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to find at least a medium to my problem. I read about wet and dry skimming for certain systems(wet for sps for low nutrients, then dry for lps and higher nutrients), and my mind gets to cranking.

I think about skimming wet for my sps but them will my lps starve or should I target feed them while skimming wet. Also i've read that skimming wet will help remove particles(protein ,food, wastes, trace elements) in the water, but to what extent. The mechanical filtration ability of a skimmer is it very noticable or not very? Does it have a true impact on the system health or not really? Does it compare to activated carbons ability to clarify the water?

With the dry skimming i've read that its better for lps corals, but it isn't good for sps because it leaves more nutrients in the system. The skimmate is darker, stinky, and seems more dense with the bad stuff and not so much of the tank water. The downside it seems is that the neck gets dirty, but if you keep you hands out of the water long enough the foam head wont fall and maybe we dont have to worry bout a dirty neck, well I don't know just a thought. With more nutrients in the water is this a better oppotunity for nitrates and phos to build up and cause problems or is this dependent on flow so the debris won't settle. Ugh, you see my problem?

also for my system I have mostly small fish even the foxface is only 3 inches big. Asm is rated for 200g I think and seems oversuzed for my system. So maybe I can run it between dry/wet and make everyone happy while the skimmer removes baddies at a fast rate on system smaller than it's rating. The last couple of days I read then adjust the stand pipe to dry, then read again and adjust to wet, and this goes one all throughout the day..

You see, I am perplexed to an extreme and all the forum reading from countless post has me stooped. It's like mixing 10 different juices in one big jar and then someone asks you can you taste the o.j.? Well, I'm sorry for the rambling but someone help me and answer my questions/theories. Fells good that I've got that out of my system.

Your logic is dizzying. Just skim in the middle lol. But seriously if you are feeding your coral or your fish you should t have a problem.

Sent from my who cares they all do it now.

Lol I worry constantly, but things grow well execp gsp which I dont have a problem with. But I may be overthinking things a bit.

Step 1: Set skimmer to whatever you want.
Step 2: Watch tank for weeks.
Step 3: Adjust if needed.

What I'm saying is don't worry about it so much. If problems arise, then deal with it, slowly.

Having said that, I don't think skimmers really do THAT much. Carbon is probably more effective at removing nutrients than a skimmer.

Ya think? Try a Xanax and chill. Wet or dry skimming is preference, either way they are both removing nasties from the water. :-) Don't get yourself worked up over it, the tank is supposed to be healthy for you, enjoy it.

Skim wet, to ensure you are skimming out as much as possible. Replace the good nutrients that were removed with water changes.

Lol, thanks everyone for you input and advice. I think i'll just stop worrying so much its a fun hobby not a job. I currently have it set more than dry but less than wet I will be happy with it and change as needed. Whew, I think I forget sometimes this is a hobby of patience, somedays I have it some days I dont.
