advice about setting up a clown harem tank

Hello all,

I recently purchased a pair of awesome designer clowns that are intended to be added into a new harem tank I'd like to set up in the next couple months.

My goal is to have the tank filled with different colors/variations of btas and a family of clowns.

For size of tank I'm shooting for around the size of a 40b-55 gal max. Ill be having 2 X 165 watt chinese fixtures over the tank (i know i know theres better on the market but its perfect fir my price range). I'm planning to add plenty of live rock to make an awesome aqua scape, but with the exception of the rock for helpful filtration, what all would be good products to help maintain a healthy tank...

Looking for recommendations on hob skimmers, hob filters, and anything else that would be helpful to maintain an exceptional tank.

Thanks I appreciate any input :)

If your current clowns are mated then that is about it for your clown harem. Any others in that tank in all probability will be killed.

Okay thanks for the insight about the fish I appreciate it! Even if they're the only two fish in there I'd be plenty of happy with it! :)

I was kinda hoping for more insight or advice about the equipment needed to maintain a healthy tank. Do you have any suggestions as far as that goes?

Lol not really sure how that would work out!?! Would he awesome to see if they could all Co - exist :)
If, you have the chance to visit bulk reef supply. Their lobby tank has about 25 or more designer clowns. And they are healthy and happy. It all depends, 25 tomato clown would be a blood bath. :uzi:

From what I have read (not personal experience) the only chance to get lots of clowns to coexist is if they are from the same clutch and have always shared a tank.

I tried this in a 40g. When they grew and paired off the dominant pair tried to kill the others (siblings) and I had to remove them and each pair in a different tank.

Anthias will form a harem.

CLowns are one of the more aggressive fish going when it comes to challenges to their home base. And some species get big enough (at 3-4") to be pretty impressive. I had Clarkiis that were so defensive they'd bite my hand and draw blood, especially the female, who rules the roost. I finally had to remove the pair because they were chasing everything in the tank.

Yes! I would totally like to see a tank set up like that! I'm from Lincoln NE and there aren't very many -what I would call- "specialty tanks". Where is this b.r.s lobby tank at?

On a side note I will say tho, Omaha NE is only 45 mins away and has one of the nicest zoos/ aquariums around the country! I could spend endless hours walking around the aquarium exhibits alone lol

Yea I've heard that too and I'm kinda thinking that my pair of will be the only clowns in there lol. I would feel terrible to put more fish in there and then have them gladiator battle till the last couple :/

That would be cool also; I like the way anthias look, but I'm mainly aiming at trying to have an exotic tank of cool btas and clowns :)

And dies anyone know why they're actually called harem tanks? Because by definition harem means "a group of female sharing a single mate"... and technically if you had multiple clowns wouldnt it be one dominant female and a group of males?!?!

Bulk Reef Supply is located in Golden Valley, Minnesota. I'm lucky enough to live about 20 minutes away. One of the best places to order supplies, IMO. On my next visit, I'll take a pic. Got a club group buy, soon.

I left you a link in another thread that I think you will find useful.
when I started my current tank in the beginning I just had a skimmer and rock for filtration. I had some power heads for water movement in the tank and a auto top off. Over the years as I have progressed the tank I have added some dosing pumps due to my increase in coral. It basically has not changed other than making some upgrades on the equipment or just trying new equipment.

forgot to mention I also started with an RO/DI. It is hard to remember what all I started with LOL. Getting old I suppose.

It's a pretty impressive sight. They have documented their whole build.

Here's episode one:
