Hi to you all,

New to marine and need some friendly advice please.

I have a 230 litre tank. Can you advise what size wavemakers are required for the size of tank I have. I intend to keep fish, live rock and corals.

I have a 2000 litre an hour external cannister filter that I ran in my tropical setup. What media would it be best to use in it.

Many thanks

What type of corals are you thinking of keeping?

What are the dimensions of your tank?

Most of us with canister filters tend to leave them empty, with the exception of carbon and/or GFO as needed.

Do you have a skimmer?

I would run carbon in your canister and you can add a poly filter if the tank gets cloudy. What kind of corals are you interested in? I would suggest a ecotech mp40 for flow in the tank

Thanks for your replies.

dimensions are 37.5 x 20.75 x 16.5. Its a 3 foot 3 tank and 1.5 foot from front to back.

looking to keep soft corals initially but maybe progress to hard later.

Controllable pumps will offer you the greatest flexibility, when your ready for corals that require more flow you can just turn them up. I only have experience with Vortech pumps, tunze and koralia also have controllable pumps, I think koralia's would be the cheapest option.

As for vortechs 2 MP40s would be more than enough for any type of corals, but with your tank dimensions you can get 3 MP10s for a little less and it will give you more randomization of flow.

Good advice Reefmedic! i did notice tho...Is your signature a "Finding Nemo" reference? I think its 42 wallaby lane... :fun4:

~4 liters = 1 gal. this tank is roughly a 60 gallon tank.
+1 on Skimmer... Absolute must have... I would also suggest a sump with an overflow box for that tank. Try to stay away from canisters as they will just cause Nitrates to always be high and a pain to service every week. This will swing your parameters and this is the worst thing for a reef tank... Things will die and you will get frustrated. MHO... Worst case, get a hang-on skimmer and 2 (150 Reactors) one with Carbon and one with GFO and hang on each side. I swear by them. Can the Canister. Pun intended... Also, do lots of research on which fish and corals to buy. Good luck and send pics... Yes to lots of live rock- that is your/our best filter...

Since you do not want to have a sump you will need a really good circulation system in your tank to keep everything stirred up. What country are you in? we know what is available here. I would check into tunze, hydor and eco tech.

hey welcome im as new as you just keep reading reading reading lots of good info on here read the totm thread get yourself a guide to reefing from barnes and noble and that got me going in the right direction...

I have a 65 gallon (with similar dimensions) and I am using (2) Jaebo WP 25 wavemakers. Probably could get away with one. They are controllable, do a great job and cost a LOT less than the Vortechs and Tunzes. You can find them on Fishstreet.com. Ebay had some a while ago, Check out the thread on here for WP 25 and WP40 for that matter. Good luck!
