HAHA, yes! I can usually keep my cool for most of the project then something little will happen and I'll yell out an obscenity. It'll usually happen once or twice more shortly after then I usually get over it and keep working. :lolspin:
Worst I ever did was have a conversation with a rock on why it wouldn't stay put.....of course my ninja like wifey busted me and never let's me forget it.
I've done this twice, Mia, with no losses at all. Use as much old water as you can for all the reasons Tom just mentioned. Have new water mixed to match salinity and temperature. Arrange rock on bare bottom. This would be a good time to add a sump if you don't already have one. Discard the old sand, keeping a cup or two to "seed" the new stuff. Don't worry about new sand at this point. I have a terrific trick to add sand later.
Get a clean, new, long necked funnel like they use for oil changes. I got mine in the automotive department at Walmart. Attach a piece of vinyl hose long enough to reach the bottom of your tank. Spoon clean, new wet sand into the funnel and guide it wherever you want the sand deposited. This works just great! Here's a picture:
