AEFW does it seem everyone is getting them

I have run across it twice I feel like I was tricked both people where getting out of the hobby I found out the hard way as to what there real motivation was , which was not loosing any money. At least I feel that way since both sold me tainted acros one had eggs I missed the second had the worms no eggs and developed eggs in QT I learned after the first time and the lost of 2500 dollars worth of acros that A QT tank is A necessity in this hobby if you are going to collect sps you need A QT tank bottom line..I just wish they would have been up front and said I am selling them because I found flat worms so you will need to QT them . I would have still bought them.

yeah

yeah

There is a cure... QUARANTINE!!!
remember, as Erasmus once said "prevention is better than a cure"

just like safe sex, protection protection protection and if you make one mistake it will cost you ...alot in this hobby but I still know alot of people that do not have A QT tank I learned the hard way if just one person reads this and understands it's not if but when you get the red bugs or flat worms , what will you do then ? buy a QT tank? lol
alot of people think I dipp my corals before I put them in , but the eggs are not affected by the dipp and you still get them.

once they get them I guarantee they will never get them again, I learned the hard way and now have a "scorched earth" approach to qt. plugs and bases are cut off and thrown out, then they get a tmpcc/interceptor dip before getting placed in the qt tank. Depending on what I do or dont find I will do a follow up di every week for 3-6 weeks

That's right but I don't think it's the incidence of redbugs has risen since we've started keeping SPS, it's probably because more people are learning about them! I'm pretty sure there is redbugs in more than 50% of SPS tanks, whose owners do not take precautions. People don't notice them but you can find them if you just look hard enough. It's not easy to spot these suckers unless your population is OUT of Control!!!

Amen to that brother...same here learned the hard way but I didn't know there was such plague until recently now everyone has it ..I didn't know they existed till A year ago no one posted about it at least I didn't see it till it wiped me out then I posted about it and noticed every week now someone asking the same questions about flat worms ..I spent almost 3 weeks asking why my corals where loosing color I heard check the water , parameters, lighting alot of things and I did that for 3 weeks then someone said baste your corals for flat worms I did and bamm there they where too late they all had them and you cannot see them on your coral they mimic the color bite marks look like alk burns etc..I cannot stress enough if you see color loss or patches of white check your corals with a baster and look for eggs before it's too late for your tank to rebound.

you can see the red bugs and there damage while they do it but with flat worms they go stealth and you see nothing but the damage and think no i don't have bugs its the water , the lights ,the alk or ph etc..lol

I know a few people dealing with them locally. Imho that's the bad part of frag swaps etc amongst local clubs it can get out hand real fast!

Hey Roger,

I do not buy corals from any reefer that is "getting out of the hobby." Yes, there are quite a few reefers that get out for legit reasons (baby, moving, lost job, etc.), but there are those few reefers that get out because they get a pest they cant get rid of.

One local reefer (who will remain nameless) was getting out of the hobby, said he was getting out because he was moving (he may actually have been moving). After all the fish were bagged and I was ready to go, his young daughter let out a gem... "Daddy's tank leaks on my head and I can't sleep at night." He was pretty quick to call his wife to get the kids out of the room. He than proceeded to give me a bunch of free stuff... that had AEFW. I kept the fish and threw out the coral. Glad I dipped!

Warmest Regards,
James

If you have SPS in QT and discover AEFW, what do you do? Suggestions on how to treat to get your QT clean?

I dealt with this (AEFW and Red bugs) in early 2008 08 - had lots of losses and have not bought any sps since. My question is has a better regime, such as Coral RX and dip every so many days been developed for AEFW. Back when I delalt with it the procedures were not working for everyone and it was like five or six weks of QT. Are there any links to new and better, proven procedures?

CUNA what's your procedure with ehe Coral RX?

CUNA
that was a funny story I know for A fact that people do that and it really upsets me because I just believe all the stories man I believe in people doing the right thing and my wife tells me I told you so ...I bought A tank and yeah the seam blew out and 120 gallons of water all over my house damage not covered on the home owners because it came from the tank and not the plumbing if the water comes from anywhere other than a pipe you are out of luck lol..I have been burned alot and just don't learn ..oh well.
I use Revive but it doesn't kill the eggs nothing does I wonder if we are going about it the wrong way maybe we need some kind of lighting to kill the bugs dead. going to research this..never know..

I dip everything that comes in till it begs for mercy.

I still got AEFWs. Dips will NOT eradicate these pests!

We have to QT SPS or demend that our SPS sources demonsrate they are QTing.

Until we ALL do this pest like this will be an issue. I'm treating now, and I'm setting up a coral QT for the future.
