AEFW from the lfs. :(

The DQ King
I went the the LFS the other day and bought a acro for my 4month old tank to see how it does. ive bought plenty of corals for my other tank from the place and have never had a issue. At the time i didnt have the dip, normally i would. I took the coral and on the back side the small dead spot had about 50 or so eggs. The tank i placed the coral in has no other corals aside from a acan. I decided to get a little bowl of water from the tank, take the coral and scrape the eggs off with a razor blade.... bad idea?

It seemed i got all of them off, as the coral was out of the water it slimed naturally so i took some of the slime and rubbed it on the dead patch hoping it would kill any other things left on there.

4hrs later PE looks great and the coral looks like its doing fine.
Would u suggest getting the dip over to that house so i can drop him in or sit it out and see what happens. From the eye i cant see 1 egg or AEFW and i spent a good amount of time looking at it

Thanks!
David

I've never tried but heard great things. I've been using TLF revive with no problems so far.

Dip for about 5 mins then take a turkey baster and baste all around the corals.

Will do! Ill pick it up tomorrow and get to work. I called the guy and told him about the AEFW's and he was piiiissseeed. The guy has stunning corals and the tank i got it from is about a 800g with hundreds of species. He was quite bummed.

This is where i stand

Dipped it once, seems to not have anymore dying and has looked the same for about a week now. What should i do? Cut the branches and plug them? Cut that base off? Or leave it? PE is there. It looks like its doing better, but its hard to tell.

AEFW your monsters! :(

Thanks again guys
David

just looks like it's receeding. if the stn has stopped, just leave it alone. It'll grow & recover faster as opposed to fragging

I hope you didnt put that back in your DT. Never put any acro that had or has AEFW in any display tank until it has been quarintitned for a few months. Honestly, I would chuck the coral. Dont risk it!! AEFW should not be underestimated! Any other acros in that tank should be taken out immediatley. There might be a few AEFW eggs on the acro that you missed. They will hatch in a few weeks after you think all is well. They will destroy any other colonies you have. Break the cycle early and QT or destory that coral.

In the future try and QT all acros for a while. I know its a PITA and you prob dont have a 2nd tank to do it. QT is one the best and most overlooked practices in this hobby. People never do it until they learn a lesson the hard way. Also, Never buy acros that even have the slightest hint of being un healthy. This will save you money and lots of hedaches.

Ya im with that 100000% BUT i dont have any other acros so woot on that note. This is the ONLY acro i got from the place, everything else ive got from him has been outstanding. Should i leave it and see what happens with that being said?

If you want to keep SPS in the future chalk this up to a easy lesson learned and toss the acro. Start fresh with a new one that is healthy. Always dip your coral in the future!! Honestly I would wait a month before introducing any new ones. There is no way to guarentee aefw didnt slip in to the system. Some types of AEFW are really nasty! You do not want them in your tank. I lost a full tank of acropora about 6 months ago. I had a really bad strain of AEFW that came from indoniesa. At first I wouldnt let go of my colonies. I searched the threads forever looking for answers reading others stories. I tried all the methods.. basting, rasses, repeated dips. Nothing would get rid of them. Every method was a band aid, not a cure. Eventually I had to remove all my colonies and start over = ( I should have just scrapped them sooner. It prolonged not having good sps in my tank. Im happy to say that I have beat AEFW now and just started re stocking my tank. Its been a month or so and no sign of AEFW! Knock on wood. Good luck!

I agree 100% been down that road a few times. When I set up my new tank after a 6mo hiatus (because of a disaster in my last one partly due to AEFW) I wouldn't even bother keeping acro's without QTing them. I'd rather take all the money i planned on spending on the tank and going to Vegas. I set up a 20H with very basic equipment and a cheap halide fixture. EVERYTHING I put in the tank gets dipped every week, sometimes 2x/week in Revive, Flatworm Exit etc for 6 weeks. If I kill it in QT Oh well. I've ran about 100 pieces thru QT so far and I'd say I've had > 90% success. Only a handful of corals had AEFW but it only takes 1 to really make your hobby turn to frustration.
