Aflac's 240 gallon buil

Hello Aflac,

No problem about providing the suggestion of the sandbed in the overflows. I would likely go 6-8" and that certainly would be deep enough for proper dentrification to take place.

Patrick

And for the overflow pipe.....ive been thinking about that a lot but im not sure what i should do...ive been reading on the durso overflow pipes but they seem to be limited on flow rates, and all the other systems that seem good require multiple bulkheads, I have one 1.5inch bulkhead in each overflow. what i did before was use no pipe and just filled the whole thing up with bio balls, put some sponges at the top and it ran perfectly with no sound at all. the water just ran over everything and out the bottom, i suppose i could do the same thing with live rock. I was also thinking of having a 1.5 inch tube coming up and then a 3 inch tube outside of that that was open at the bottom, fill the middle space with live rock rubble or something like that and leave the top of the 3 inch slightly above the water line. so water would flow down the overflow box then back up through the live rock rubble then back down through the 1.5 inch pipe.

Did a little bit of work on the plumbing today....and got an update on my stand, looks like it will ship on monday so i should have it Wednesday. im am very ready to get it so i can get this show on the road. but first off are the overflow pipes i designed.

here is the inside of the pipe.

here is the whole thing:

Here is i installed...the water runs down in the overflow box, then goes back up through the big tube then back down he inner tube inside. hope it works....and yes i have small holes drilled in the top.

also redid all my return plumping tonight, here is the back after i removed all the old stuff

and here it is after the new plumbing was insalled

that should give me a pretty good siphon break so i dont have to worry about draining the tank.

of course now that ive built my cool overflow idea im already thinking of changing it...the more i read about he DSB in the overflow box the more i like it

Hello Aflac,

Just saw your overflow pipe pictures....the idea seems certainly interesting. However I am slightly concerned that you used ABS for them instead of PVC.

If you would like do a search on abs plumbing on here and you will see why I ask this question. To summarize abs and why people don't utilize it on aquariums is due to the fact that it isn't viewed as potable and has the potential for algaecides and other nasties that can leach into the water from the pipes themselves.

Patrick

ive been reading on the ABS and so far i havnt found any threads that talk about anyone having any problems with the ABS...some people have talked about the ABS glue having problems but not the ABS itself, they were saying that a lot of the things like bulkheads and things we use in the tank a lot are actually made out of ABS....i used PVC glue instead of ABS (cause thats what i had, and since its internal and not high pressure there shouldnt be any problems with that. do you have any data that shows ABS being bad? i only looked for about 30 minutes but couldnt find anything. thanks.

Well got the tank im using for my sump today. its 72x13.5x18 yes i know its crazy skinny, but with a 18 inch deep tank and no room for a fish room i didnt have many options. I have not gotten the glass panels i ordered to make my baffels but i have everything else. after reading the thread that Patrick pointed out to me that had mr wilsons ideas for overflow box DSB i decided to make a benthic zone in my sump and spend some quality time with some eggcrate tonight and have it all built....now all i need is a stand and some water...ha. i will have it set up so the returns from the tank come in at the sides and flow to the center where the return pumps are, the left side will be the skimmer side and have about a 9 inch depth of water and the right side will be the benthic/refugium side with about a 14 inch water depth.

Couple of updates....first i decided to get rid of the AquaC ev-400 and am going to go with a SRO5000sss which means i can put it on a stand and raise it and thus can set up the sump the way i wanted to all along....yay.

second big update is my stand showed up....very excited it means i can finally get this show on the road. its a steel stand as you can see in the first picture with red oak cabinetry as you can see in the second. the wood still needs to be stained so thats not what the final color will be but i am very excited. got the stand from a place called steel aquarium stands and so far i am crazy impressed with the quality and how it looks....the cabinetry is awesome, very well constructed and attached by magnets.....i love a good electro magnetic field so that is a really cool feature for me.

I am out of town for a few days....infact was almost late to the airport for my flight because i wanted to get the stand set up first and the delivery guy was later than scheduled....ha....but as soon as im back on monday ill get started and have more updates.

looking good but id surely bypass the sand in the overflows, they wont reduce enough nitrates to be worthwhile plus it will become a huge detritus trap.

you can build a couple of dursos for a few bucks each out of pvc and a few fittings. check out my 215 build theres a few picks of some silent dursos

Yeah. With the new sump design and the new protein skimmer I'll have to build a platform for the protein skimmer that's about 8 inches tall. I'm thinking about using the space beneath the skimmer for a DSB.... Should be a lot easier to keep it clean there. Also the overflow pipes I built are based on durso pipes. Just modified. If they don't work I'll go back to a conventional durso probably

Hello Aflac,

Everything seems to be coming along really well.....I like the stand and I am eager to here your results with the SRO5000sss.

Take Care,

Patrick

Yeah. I spent a lot of time reading up on protein skimmers. The SRO ones seem to be the best bang for your buck right now. But now that that research us done and decision made I'm reading up on ozone. No idea if I'm going to use it but I'm trying to kern about it

Hello Aflac,

Ozone is an interesting topic.....I have had a red sea 200mg/hr ozone unit for 6 years that I had been using on and off during that time. Within the past six weeks I hooked it up on my 250g system and have been positive about the results. I do suggest if you plan on using Ozone to aquire a TDS probe though so that you can get an idea of the amount of ozone being dosed in the system and how the system is reacting. An even larger topic of discussion in using ozone seems to be how your applying the ozone to the system itself. I personally am running multiple skimmers on my setup so I dosing ozone to one of the protein skimmers and having the skimmer drain on fresh carbon. I don't know if the SRO5000s is designed for ozone or not but I am aware that the Aqua C EV400 you own is designed for it.

Perhaps you can run the AquaC for ozone and the SRO5000s without and see how they perform working along side each other :smokin:

Patrick

Yeah I was thinking about that with the aquac i don't really have the space for the aquac in the stand. That's why I decided to change to the SRO. So I'm not sure how I would run the ozone but I am deffinatly interested in the idea so am doing a lot of reading. I seem to do a week of reading on a subject here before I make a desicion. And I just started reading ozone yesterday
