AGA bulkhead question

Does anyone know if this sched 80 bulkhead will fit in a standard AGA megaflow? I'd like to replumb my drains and replace the cheapo bulkheads as well.

Any suggestions would be nice :D

I don't see why not...Just get the right size bulkhead for the right size hole on your overflow...

Typically for the AGA megaoverflow it is a 3/4" return bulkhead and a 1"inch drain bulkhead to the sump...Well that is how mines is set up but I just went ahead and bought the overflow kit for $50 since I did not know how to make it anyways...

-Perhaps one of the most worst and best investments I ever made...$100 for a bunch of

( $5 maybe $10 at the most in pvc fittings from home depot...)

Have you had a problem with them in the past.....the AGA kit ones?......I had to tighten mine once or twice as the gasket compressed on installation, but never had a problem....In fact I would think the glass would crack from too much shear on the edges first if over tightened before leaking.....been my only concern.....If yours are loosening....you could put locktight on them.

I find it hard to upgrade this stuff sometimes, because I don't think its neccesary.....ie not under high pressure or vibration situations, pushing the envelope of the design,......though piece of mind is priceless.

I agree, the AGA kit is overpriced, but is a simple kit with easy dissasembly and I like the way you can adjust the water height...I have heard people that have water noise with them....but mine seems quiet enough......its the skimmer that kills me!!!!

Yeah, basically this is just for piece of mind. The bulkheads haven't caused any issues yet.

I was planning on replumbing the drain and figured I'd swap out the bulkheads while I was down there.

I guess I could call over at a LFS to see if they;ll measure for me.

Thanks.

If anyone has an empty AGA RR and is willing to measure the drain hole, that would be great.

Cheers,

Jim

Hey Jim,

Bruce (CaptiveReefSystems) is very knowledgeable in AGA tanks. You might want to shoot him a PM to see if he can help.

Here is a direct quote from Bruce when I asked a similar question:

FYI, the holes in your tank are drilled for sch40 not sch80. Sch80 bulkheads are a lot thicker which requires a larger hole, which you currently don't have.

In my opinion, you don't need the extra thickness. You just need a high quality bulkhead. The bulkhead that I can get at my local Ace (Davis Lumber) seems to be of higher quality than those that Marine Depot (or most LFS) sells.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,
I just measured my AGA 92 gal corner, and the hole for the drain is 1 3/4 inches. And as raymond stated the AGA megaoverflow comes with a 3/4" return bulkhead and a 1"inch drain bulkhead.

Enjoy,
