ARRIVAL

Ready? Here we go….

So I mentioned in my intro that I would discuss freight. I figured it would be appropriate for the Large Tank Forum. Hopefully sharing my experience can save some people a lot of headache. For those who don’t know, the tank came from TX and I am in CA. It was not as simple a just showing up with a truck and hauling it away (though it did cross my mind). The first challenge was finding a company that had experience crating such large and fragile items. I was given the number of a local UPS Freight rep who put me in touch with a company called Craters and Freighters. This is who UPS uses so they had to be good right?

Speaking with C&F, they were definitely competent and were asking me all the right questions. A few things that were particularly attractive to me:

1) They handle EVERYTHING. I pay one check and have one neck to choke
2) C&F picks up all items, crates and packages appropriately
3) They offer 3rd party insurance through Firemen’s Fund. I used to have Firemen’s Fund for my insurance and they are reputable.

Admittedly I almost had a heart attack when I got the final estimate!! For anyone who plans on buying a large tank, don’t neglect to budget for the freight! I did but had to adjust my freight budget by about 200% in the end!!!

Okay so here goes the visual stimulation…..

Wood crate in back is tank. LARGE box in front is the stand. Long box closest to the car is the Spectra light fixture. Chiller, ballast box, and accessories are on top.

Erik,

Im glad to see things are going well for you! I cant wait to see what you come up with. Also, this was my dream tank too.. but i guess I finally woke up?? ;) LOL.

I will be in touch and most importantly, back into the hobby sooner than I expected.

Hi Edward-

Good to hear from you! What do you think of that packing job? Think we picked the right guys?

I knew you would not be leaving the hobby for long ;) Can't wait to hear the details!!

lol, sweet rims, now i know what to look out for when i see an m3 out in the road, i dont usually say this cause i almost ALWAYS prefer stock wheels over aftermarket crap.

if i ever see you driving around in that car, ill be sure to congrats you for getting that killer tank. HAHA.

Thought you guys might be interested in the sump design. It is modeled after H&S design with the smoked acrylic look. I am trying to get a hold of some H&S sump photos to reference. In the meantime, here is mine. Since the skimmer is external, I was able to dedicate most of the internal space to the refugium and cryptic zone rubble tower. The rubble tower holds approximately 60-80 lbs of rubble (about 2 ½ 5 gallon buckets). Alas I will rid myself of the PITA chore of washing filter socks!

The cryptic zone came to mind after I noticed how much sponge had grown in the shaded and protected areas of my last tank. Back in the mid 90’s I used to visit Steve Tyree’s apartment often. His sump consisted of a large (4’ x 4’ ?) storage container filled to the brim with LR and a large skimmer. This tank was incredibly healthy when compared to other systems of the age. Not long after this, he published his work on cryptic zone filtration:

While I don’t think my rubble tower will be big enough to make a significant difference from a filtration perspective, it still serves a number of beneficial purposes:

1) Nitrification / denitrification
2) Water clarity
3) Pod breeding
4) Aeration / bubble diffusion
5) Source of lots of frag mounting material :p

Here is a photo of the H&S sump that was the inspiration for the bronze/smoked acrylic look:

Tank looks a little dirty. Did you get a discount for that?

Congratulation again Erik. Very impressive.

Oh...and check out out ATI Aquablue Specials T5...if you want maximum par output, I think this is the one to go with.

Do you foresee a problem with detritus building up under the live rock? Might be a good idea to include a tray at the top you can put filter material in.

Cool sump design. I've always been fascinated by cryptic zones as well.

Haha define discount ;)

Tank cleaned up nice though....check out after I got done with it. Note super polished acrylic on overflow. More about that later....
