Aggressive Tusk?

Hi guys, I have a 4" dogface puffer and a 5" Harlequin Tusk. They have been in the same tank for about four months and everything seems ok.

However, I had a question about the aggressivness of the Tusk. The Tusk is definately the king of the tank and the puffer just minds his own business, only caring about me.

From time to time I'll se the Tusk exerting his dominance over the puffer...he'll crowd him and nip him in the belly. Not a big attacking bite...just a small nip as if to say "Don't forget that I'm king and I don't really like you"...the puffer always rolls so that his belly is exposed and when the tusk bites him he'll get a mouthful of rubbery balloon like stretchy material that doesn't break so he let's go immediately.

The puffer doesn't puff up and isn't all upset...it's like he just deals with it and the tusk moves on. It's not continuous and only happens once in awhile but everytime the tusk gets close(usually during feeding times) the puffer will roll so that his belly is what the tusk gets to bite, nothing else. Sometimes the tusk is so aggressive that the puffer just takes off and swims to another part of the tank...but not that upset and comes right back out like it was no big deal.

Is this normal? I'm thinking that the tusk sees the puffer as competition for food and is just making sure the puffer knows who is boss. The puffer is smaller than the tusk atm and maybe that helps contribute to this issue but when the puffer gets bigger I wonder if this will continue. My last Tusk in a different tank NEVER messed with my Stars n Stripes puffer because the puffer was much bigger than the tusk. I know it's an "aggressive" tank but I worry about my little buddy. He's the favorite around here as you can all understand.

Like I said it's not a mean grab-on-and-try-to-rip bite...more like a nip...like a dog teaching another dog in the pack who is boss. The puffer is never damaged and never blows up like he actually feels threatened(the only time he's blown up is when I was holding a piece of pizze up for him to check out, lol. Apparently he doesn't like pizza).

Should I be worried at all or is this normal behavior?

I wonder if I should add a niger trigger to give the tusk something else to think about?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it. It seems like they are just displaying to each other. My HT never bothered anything, but he did occasionally fake a charge, puff out his gills or bare his teeth.

Oh mine bares his teeth at us humans all the time...even bites at the glass when we are right there like "I'd BITE YOU if I could!!!" He's an alpha male for sure. :)

Wow! Sounds like the baddest Tusk I've ever heard about! In the brief time I had mine, he was the tank boss, but never biting aggressive.

I think it probably will continue, as the puffer grows, maybe even intensify and finally the Tusk will give up, when the dogface outgrows him gains about an 1" every 6 months on him.

Not to worry you more but I had a similar "problem" with my porcupine puffer and tusk...until the puffer out grew the tusk. Lets just say the tusk is not around anymore. It was like all of a sudden, the puffer had enough and decided to stand up for himself. It really was no contest once the puffer got mad. Unfortunately by the time I could intervene, the tusk was torn up pretty bad.

Funny thing is, that puffer is still in my tank with a whole bunch of other fish and he is very peaceful and never bothers anyone else. I think he was just bullied so much by the tusk and snapped once he got bigger.

Yeah sluggo is just a big softy...so was my big S&S. All they care about is humans who can feed them. Here is the size difference with my old S&S and the tusk in and old tank:

My new dogface is 3/4 the size of the tusk with him. Not at all the same situation.

To tell you the truth, if one day he decided to give the tusk what for, I won't blame him a bit. He's asking for it. Such is life...

My heart, as always with everyone in the house, is with the puffer.

I get that same behavior from my tusk except he's actually done real damage before. So long as they remain nips, I don't think you should worry, though. I definitely know what you mean when you say they it has that whole, "I'm the boss, remember that" attitude. IME I've found that so long as a fish doesn't try to fight back against the tusk, it doesn't get bad.

Well you are right about the S&S being big softies! Does this look like a face that wants to hurt anyone????

Hes about 12-14" and at least 4" wide. Like a football size.

Yeah hes quite healthy...its hard to tell from the pic how big he actually is but if you look at his mouth and where his eyes are compared to the one in the pic above (much younger S&S) you can get an idea of how big he really is! Im not joking about being the size of a football!
