Ailing Angel

Its a known fact that kanamycin ie kannaplex and furan2 can be combined and are synergistic. Kanna gets absorbed through skin and furan does not and mostly treats external infections. I have iused this combo many times. Infact it used to be made by aquatronics the same blend. You use full strngth in both. Furan 2 by itself in marine tank is not that great. Kanaplex in combo is wonderful!! Standard freshwater dips. Ro water at same temp as tank with same ph ie small buffer for 3 to 5 minutes kills lots of parasites and gives fish lots of relief. I like to rotate this with quick cure dips. Ie 1 tsp of quick cure for 3 gallons of sea water in bath for 30 to 45 mins airated. As for my credentials. Well I'm no chemist but you can check me out. June tank of the month and in large reef tanks bith of two systems of 30k gallons. In addition I just treated 3 baby genicanthus personatus with these antibiotics and posted about it in reef fishes under that fish and my large tank blog.

Hkgar. I'm more than happy to walk you through this on a telephone ans give you more details of my experiences. You can pm me and I will give you my cell.

I would not mix medications; especially multiple broad-spectrum antibiotics. I would follow Humblefish's recommendation and start by treating for bacterial infection with Furan-2. If that doesn't resolve the problem, then consider treating for possible parasitic infections.

+1 Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. But the link provided by hedgedrew does indicate kanamycin (i.e. Kanaplex) can be combined with Furan-2.

A formalin bath would only be useful if the fish has Amyloodinium (temporary relief) or Brooklynella. I don't see evidence of either disease. A 5 minute FW dip is less invasive and might not be a bad idea to confirm the presence of gill flukes (which can also spread to the eyes).

That fish need chlorphine phosphate or fresh water bath with alternative days formalin baths. That will take care of parasites. Then we need to make alovely kannaplex furan 2 mix for quarantine tank they get put back into. You will save the fish this way.!!

Ok, today I added Kenaflex and the second dose of Furan. I also did a freshwater dip and it scared the hell out me! When I introduced her to the freshwater, she went straight to the bottom and just laid on her side in that kind of curl that occurs when they die. I got her out after a minute as I was sure she was a goner or soon would be. I was concerned she couldn't breath and use her swim bladder.

Did you aerate & temp match the FW before you did the dip? pH match helps too. Did you use RODI or at least RO?

Some fish will "play dead" when you administer a FW dip. IME so long as they are still breathing, and you keep the dip under 5 mins, they are usually fine.

did a temp match, but did not aerate or check ph. Will do that next time. I may try again in an hour or so.

Yeah, it's best to aerate the water for at least an hour before doing the dip. To pH match you can use "baked" baking soda, or a little trick I learned is to just shoot some tank water in there. Gets it close enough.

All that!! Plus you can poke fish in bucket to keep it moving. Has to be at least 3 mins to get an effect. Closer to 5 you get better results. Temp and ph match with ro water.

Did a five minute dip today, di a 3 minute today. After the dips, she spends some time swimming in circles at the top of the tank.

If the fish was in the HT with a treatment of PraziPro for 3 days prior to beginning the antibiotic treatment is the Formalin dips necessary?

How many days should I do fresh water dips?

Sometimes their equilibrium can be a little messed up following a FW dip. If this happens, I'll place the fish in an acclimation box until he appears "œnormal" again. Sometimes you even have to hold the fish upright, and gently glide him through the water (to get saltwater flowing through the gills again).

Did you see any flukes fall out of the fish? They would appear to be tiny white things, primarily falling out of the gills.

Didn't see anything falling out but I really didn't watch for anything falling out. I did look on the bottom of the dip bucket after and did not notice anything unusual.

How many times did you dip him over how many days. The bath in formalin is real easy. Take same salt water in 2 to 3 gallons airate and. Add just little under tsp for 30 to 40 mins. I like to do 3 dips of each or at least total of 5 between them. Rotate. Don't fresh water dip 2 days in row.

The formalin will get more than just prazzi. Prazzi for flukes. And fresh water dip help that. Formalin is for other protozoan infections also. And will help flukes also. How is fish looking after baths and antibiotics??
