Ailing Angel

I diped her twice yesterday 1 minute and 3 minutes and once today for 5 minutes all freshwater.

I am becoming more convinced that this poor fish is blind. Here is a video I just took. (I hope it works I don't have much luck linking to photbucket videos).

Two seconds after I stopped the video she turned and swan right into the scrapper handle, like she never saw it.

I am going to feed Mysis and Cyclo-peeze tonight and see if she eats. She had be given food just before the video was taken and paid no attention to it.

What biological filter if any are using in hospital tank. I would be changing water in there a lot. And replace lost meds. Have you checked ammonia

The eyes appear to be fine. I am not using any bio filter as my understanding is that the antibiotics would kill it anyway. I thought about testing for Amonia, but with the green tint to the water from the furan I can't imagine getting a good reading. I am using an amonia alert and doing 25% water changes.

Its time for a formalin dip with tank salt water. Heavy airated. Its Less stressful than fresh water dip and it shloshes lots off fish

Antibiotics do kill bacteria, but usually not to the point where it will completely decimate a bio-filter. Enough nitrifying bacteria will survive for the bio-filter to continue to function.

I would suggest doing at least two courses of Furan-2 treatment and then reassess the situation.

I have an Aquaclear HOB filter running, but without media. I do have a sponge and ceramic bio in my dt sump. I will add to the HOB.

That's goood idea. Just watch it cause antibiotics coulld depress but from my experience kanna plus furan is not a nightmare for bio filter. Cipro forget it!!

There is something seriously wrong with this fish. After 4 days of antibiotic treatments and a couple fresh water dips she appears healthy.

I am almost convinced that there are some sensory problems. She spends all of her time swimming in left turn circles of about 3 inches in diameter. All day and probably all night as when I observe her at 6 AM with all lights off she is swimming in those circles.

When food is introduced there is absolutely no reaction. Just circle swimming. The food can be all around her and she acts as though it is not there.

It is as though she has lost all her senses. If I bump her with my finger there is virtually no reaction.

Could be swim bladder disorder, although that would not explain the blindness. By any chance, have you fed her red nori in the past? I have a PBT that does what you're describing if I feed her red nori (I'm guessing it's an intestinal issue).

She hasn't eaten anything in at least two weeks, but I do feed the tank both red and green nori.

That's a really bad sign. :( Unfortunately, I don't know what else to tell you. At this point, I'm inclined to go with hedgedrew's suggestion of also treating her for parasitic infestation, as I don't see how you have much to lose. Do you have access to Chloroquine phosphate by any chance? I'd hate to see you treat an angel with copper. Tank transfer would be another option, but would only be effective against ich - not velvet, brook, etc.

Have you tried the formalin bath yet?

Just got the Formalin. How long should I leave her in the bath. It is 37% and I am going to use 1 ml per gallon. n ok?

Are you using Formalin-MS? If so, it's 20 drops per gallon and that equates to 1 ml.

I generally only leave the fish in the bath for 45 mins max. But if she looks like she's in distress, remove ASAP. Aerate heavily during the bath, as formalin will quickly deplete the water of O2 (can't stress that enough).

Not sure if it is Formilan MS. My LFS doesn't stock it for sale, but has it on hand for in store use. It doesn't have "green" in it and it is 37% Formaldehyde. I put 1 ml in 1 gallon and heavy aeration + some ammonia stop.

Bathing for 45 minutes. Will dip in 1.010 water after for a minute before returning to HT.
