aiptasia help...

I used Joe's Juice on all of the aiptasia in my tank (about 6 of them), but within 2 days they were all back. Any suggestions on what I did wrong/how I can get rid of them? Thanks,
Matt

Kalkwasser paste will kill them immediately... Just a tiny drop to smother them and they will be gone forever.

Get a couple of peppermint shrimp.. They eat the stuff like mad, once they find it...

And they will eat anything remotely close to aiptasia, including xenia and feather dusters. These recommendations often turn into "How to catch peppermint shrimp" threads.

They never ate my xenia.. xenia grows like a weed anyway... LOL

Catching shrimp isn't that hard when you train them to eat from airline tubing...

Nabob:
I think you have to make kalk paste yourself from kalkwasser and water...

That would be interesting to see!

I had two peppermints for about 2 moths they did not eat the aptasia or my xenia, I end up taking the rock out and let it dry under the sun. I did not have a major problem thou and the rock was not too big.

Berghia nudibranch will rid your tank of aptaisia. Aptaisia is the only thing the nudibranch eats. The only problem is they will die once all the aptaisia is gone unless you can catch them and give them to a fellow reefer. I had a 90g tank with alot of aptaisia, I ordered 8 berghia and they did the rest.

Are you recommending this?

how many should I order for a 55 gallon...the aiptasia aren't out of control yet, but I just counted 8, and I'm sure there are some that I can't see.

I think the pepps are a better idea. You don't have an epidemic of aiptasia... 8 heads of aiptasia in a 55 gallon? I think one nudi would starve, even if it could find the aiptasia...

at least the shrimp will become an additional janitor and keep any ongoing outbreaks under control, eliminating the need to buy a nudi or break out the kalk or joe's juice everytime you see an aiptasia polyp...

I would put a little more thought into the responsibility we have as denisons of poaching of the reefs than to put something in your tank you know can't be there indefinitely and has a high rate of mortality without special care.

Copperbands might eat the aiptasia, but then they can be difficult to get to eat other foods. I had one that was absolutely stunning to watch cruise around the tank. It ate all the aiptasia, but then slowly (over 3 months) starved to death while I desperately tried to find prepared food it would eat.

I have used Peppermints with sucess also, but they became a snack for my Sixline Wrasse. I dont have any solid proof, but I highly doubt my Chromis ate them.

Personally I get more enjoyment from mixing a thick kalk paste and feeding to the aips. You can watch them inhale it and realize that its not food. A couple minutes later... no aiptasia.

Yes, I would recommend the berghia if you have a ton of aiptasia. If you only have few well that's a different story. But berghia will eat all the aiptasia, then die in the tank if you can't get them to a fellow reefer. Before being turned on to th berghia, I tried peppermint shrimp, cbb, and joe's juice to no avail. As mentioned above, the peps and cbb are hit and miss, the jj just gives the aptaisia a reason to get in another part of the tank. I bought mine from a guy on here called saltyunderground. Contact him and he could recommend the right amount of berghia for your situation.

I think it needs to be said again, obviously people either just don't care about sustainability or ethical treatment of our stolen reef critters...

I don't think 8 aiptasia heads in a 55g will feed anything but a small shrimp for a couple of days.

I don't know about you, but the more I keep my hands out of my tank the better it looks. I personally wouldn't kalk; that's just another reason to stick my hands in the tank... But that's just me. And especially when there is a willing predator for the stuff.

hit or miss on a 7$ shrimp? good bet to me...

that's my 2c and I'm sticking to it...
