Aiptasia in sump

My peppermint shrimp has made a quick meal of aiptasia in the main tank, but I have found that I have a few aiptasia in the sump now. Is it safe to leave it there, or is it going to migrate to the main tank?

The aiptasia is on the few pieces of rock I have in the sump. If I remove it, should I go with a peppermint in the sump too? If I take the rock out, how can I removed the aiptasia? Would a 1.03sg bath work?

Thanks in advance

You could leave them, I've even seen some folks use them as filtration, but I'd probably not risk it. Some peppermint shrimp may be a good choice for your sump.

Take the rocks out one at a time and let the pep's have at it in the display if you have room .the hypo bath wont hurt the aiptasia .I have a 45 gal tall tank that was being used as a refugium ,it has had no flow ,food or heat for 6 months the water is 2/3 evaporated and the aiptasia is still alive!!!

I'd pull the rock out & just let it dry out for a week.

Yeah, you'll have to reseed the rock, but I'd prefer the peace of mind knowing it was gone than have to deal with the headaches down the road.

I would not put it back in my tank directly after letting it dry out. I imagine there's going to be a lot of dead stuff on the rock after a week and wouldn't want that leeching back into my tank.

Honestly, I would just leave them. If by some small chance they make it to your tank, your peps will take care of them. It's not worth the effort IMO and why ruin good seeded LR by drying it out?

Your best bet would be to either add a peppermint shrimp or two like you were thinking or use an aiptasia remover like Joes juice or Red Sea's Aiptasia X

Aiptasia

Hello:

Check this video out (second one in the first row)

http://www.reefvideos.com/

Some people would actually concider Aiptasia to be beneficial to keep in your sump, in the above "duplexum" video they mention how its the only way to get rid of some kind of protein that skimmers cannot skim.

I hope this helps,

E

That video looks interesting. I will try and put the small rock with aiptasia in the overflow box, and see what happens. As Abulgin says, the peps will get it if anything gets to the tanks. I'll keep you posted

I have a bunch in my sump, and none in my display tank (( no peps in the display )). I did put a did put a pep in the sump to take care of the ones on the rocks, but it hasn't touched any that are on the baffles and the skimmer section.

I kill them on sight where ever they are. Joe's juice works ok. Sometimes you need repeated applications.
