Air Adjuster Upgrade?

I have heard the hardware stores sell some kind of air adjuster that would be a good upgrade for a skimmer.

Can someone describe this air adjuster and what section it would be in?

I always uses the fittings in the plumbing isle in home depot. I think they are 1/4" maybe 1/8" Im not too sure. Just a water valve. Screw types are the best that I found.

Are they brass or plastic?

The brass is more adjustable, like a needle valve.
