Akindynos Clownfish

Looking for some information/experiences (outside of LiveAquaria.com) with this clownfish. With all the "designer" clownfish out there, I'm wanting to stay out of the mainstream and do something different. Plus, I want something a little bigger and I love the all white tail :)

Thanks in advance.

What do you want to know. I have a breeding pair that I got as a young pair. Had them for about 3 years before they started breeding. Now they lay eggs as soon as the previous clutch hatches. They are not too hard on their tank mates. I haven't seen them available for a while. Australian collectors are making too much money on corals to waste their time on brown clowns that don't sell very fast.
Although I have raised clownfish babies before, I have not tried these. One batch of babies would likely flood my local market for several months.
Their carmel color and white tails are quite attractive to me though.

What else do you need to know?

Apparently I spoke too soon. It looks like Sea Dwelling Creatures (a wholesaler in Los Angeles) has some large ones. If your local store has an account with them, they can order them for you. Based on the wholesale price, the retail will be over $120 each. A word of warning! Like chrysopterus and tricinctus clowns, akindynos are very susceptible to brookynella (clownfish disease). If you don't have experience treating this disease it might be a bit of a gamble.

Thanks guys. Not really interested in breeding them, just want them due to their different coloration. They'll be members in a fish-only tank. I did see the one on DD, wanted to pick it up but I'm about a week or two from finishing coming out of hyposalinity.

I have a login for Sea Dwelling from my buddy, so I might have to have him order me some if the one on DD is gone by then.

They are a beautiful fish and do grow a little bigger than some other species--I like the caramel color that develops, especially as they mature. I have a pair, but they aren't sure if they like each other or not...
Phil, you should raise some of those guys! (or let them have a vacation in TN ;) )

Matt,
Mine weren't sure if they liked each other or not either. They were in the same tank for about five years, but the larger fish kept the other away from her. The smaller fish had gotten a little bigger and I was afraid that it had turned into a female, even though both were smaller than what I expected a mature female to be. Last year I put a BTA into the tank and the female went right in. (It was a mostly a sps tank and I hadn't had room for an anemone until a nudi outbreak took out my two large monti caps :() It took the male about two months of gradually getting closer and closer to the anemone before the female let him in. About two weeks after he joined her in the anemone they were laying eggs.

Thanks for that information Phil. My pair may be doing something similar to what yours did. They were kept in a 25gH tank for a couple of years, but a few weeks ago were moved to a 240g reef display (with a bunch of monti caps believe it or not!). The female has taken ownership of a BTA on one side of the tank and seems to be allowing the male to come closer. They have both put-on a bit of size since the move, so we are hopeful!

Pester me to take them next time Reefvette :)

Woohoo....snagged the pair of Akindynos clowns from DD tonight..can't wait.

I got a pair from DD a couple years ago. I think they're great clowns, have them in with a red carpet, lots of personality now. They were very skiddish for quite a while.

Yeah, the look perfect to me. They starting swimming around the QT immediately and didn't look stressed at all. I'm very happy with this pair and yet, again, impressed by the quality from Divers Den.

Thanks for the tips...much appreciated.

They have already eaten twice since getting into the QT and they weren't shy about it, haha.

I feed a pretty wide variety of foods including Rods Pacific Plankton, Rods Herbivore, Fish-Only, and Regular, PE Mysis, bloodworms, Super soft Spirulina pellets, & NLS. I also do cylopeeze and spirulina brine sometimes as well.

All the above frozen foods are soaked in either Omega 3 fish oil, Selcon, Garlic Elixir, or VitaChem for about 30-60min before feeding.
