Akumal Beach

Wife and I are headed to Riviera Maya this Sunday for a week, she really wants to snorkel with sea turtles and from what i've read, Akumal Beach seems to be the place to go for them.

My question is, has anyone been snorkeling there, if so, do you recommend going on a guided tour or just going to the beach and swimming out?

I've read both options, many people have said they just go to the beach and swim out about 100-200 yards and turtles are every where. But the problem is, all the articles/reviews are from 3 or 4 years ago, so I'm not sure how it is now.

Thanks!

Akumal was gorgeous but that was during my honeymoon in 1987 at Cancun! There was a natural aquarium their you could snorkel in , it was amazing!

Going on you own is the way to go. There is a public beach and places to eat. Snorkeling in the roped off area is where I have seen turtles. There is vert good snorkeling to the south in front of the Akumal Beach Resort. The ABR might have a day pass available.
