I have a 4 month old diplay tank along with a sump/refugium
The refugium has about 7 pounds of rubble & tonga branch.
Macro Alage and my friend the sea horse.
I have been noticing that bright red alage has been
growing in my refuge&display, is this good or Bad?

If you can blow it off with water is not coraline, and is bad, I cant remember the name right now, but the color is way to sharp to be coraline, also it seem to be on the cheato

red slime algae!!! thats the name...I think LOL

It's red cyano............................not a good thing, but not deadly to your horse...

Causes are phosphates & lack of flow...............

I know you con't want too much flow in your horse tank, but you've gotta find that happy medium between where the horses are happy, yet there is enough flow to control the cyano.

Check your phosphates & increase the flow slightly. Try & remove as much of the cyano as possible by vacumning it out.

There is a product called Chem-Cure that is specifically for eliminating cyano & it's worked great for me. My corals were fine w/ it, but I'd research a bit more to find out if it's harmful to horses.

Chem-Cure will not harm the seahorse.

Your tank is to warm for seahorses IMO. I'd max out at 75.

Phosphate removers that have worked for me are phos ban and chemipure.

The cyanobacteria is also a sign of a newly established system. 48 hours without light will kill it, but will not stop it from returning.

Thanks!! this tank is a refugium and I do have a heater in there. The reason for the temp is my halide. Do you think a chiller would be sufficent?

Before adding a chiller, move the heater from the sump to the tank and see if that lowers the temp in the refugium a bit. A fan blowing over the surface of the water in your refugium will also lower the temp.

That algae still looks like coraline to me, but there is an easy way to figure out which it is. Touch it. If it is slimy and peals away easily is is cyano. If it is hard, it is coraline.

So I did a good cleaning to my fuge this weekend. Found out that I had a mixture of red coraline and red cyano. I brushed the algae off with a sponge while I was vacuming the tank.
I am using purple up and was thinking thats probally the reason for the algae bloom. I have noticed that my display tank seems to be going through different phases of algae.
Hopefully the bad algae will die off and new coraline will grow in.
Heres a pick of my horse in his home!!!
Really don't know the scientific name of this horse?
