Algae help

Algae is a result of excessive nutrients. Get an ATS, and never look back. Grow algae where YOU want to, to remove the excess nutrients from your display tank.

I think I will go ahead and make a ATS myself just to have a good size to put over my refugium.
After I do the dosing of Flucon.

So far it has slowly improved a bit. But nowhere near gone.

I put in a rose pincushion urchin yesterday. He hasn't moved a bit since being placed in the DT. Although his color is all there and no spines have fallen off.

Here is my proof that is all you need, an ATS, good lighting, and a good skimmer. Here is my 150g. I don't dose anything, change water about once a year. When salinity drops off, I put fresh sw in the ato.

Looks really nice! Thanks for sharing.

My tank has been running for years and needs a treatment before I start adding corals.

After I get everything under control with the treatments I have running then I will put in a ATS to keep it under control. I found some good DIY ATS videos. It's way more affordable then other solutions.

First things first tho. I really need to get the algae under control and make sure all my levels are where they need to be.

At this point this is what I have in:

The ceramic bio filter brick.
Phosban reactor running GFO
Phosban reactor running bio-pellets
Protein skimmer
Refugium filled with colourpa
Large cleanup crew and a urchin

Starting next week Flucon treatment With skimmer off for 3 days, will keep bio-pellets and GFO running.

After i see algae gone and levels under control I will add a ATS running on a 18hr light-on schedule.

Thanks for the compliments. With all due respect, this is where I see you making your big mistake.

Short term - use API's Algaefix marine. HERE is a thread on Reef Central about it. I have done this first when I lost control of my tank, and algae took over killing all of my corals. After you see the algae die off, do a 25% water change.

Long term - Make or buy an ATS. Be ready to deploy it after your treatment of Algae Fix marine, and then BE PATIENT. The ATS's screen will need time to mature, but it will come into it's own. Just let it do it's thing. Running about 16-18 hours a day of light.

My ATS is from a member here, Floyd R Turbo. It is worth EVERY penny.

This has been my experience, and I can testify to this that this is the method to get your tank back to where it was, or where you want it.

The carbon source fed bacteria from the bio-pellets will coat everything in your tank including the GFO & bio-brick making them ineffective.

I would seriously avoid caulerpa! It's a nightmare to even risk having it in your sump. Go with cheato!!!

Consider dosing HYDROGEN PEROXIDE & SUGAR instead of other methods!

I was incorrect. It is cheato not caulerpa.

Excess nutrients is your problem.

I used to run a cheato reactor, along with my ats to clear out the tank of excess nutrients. Once the nutrients are down to an acceptable level, the ATS beat out the cheato and I had to remove it.

Here is a sample of my Aquamaxx biopellet reactor that I turned into a cheato reactor, and what it used to pull when it was in operation. Next to it is hair algae I pulled from my ATS.

Your source of hair algae is excess nutrients. Put in an ATS and grow your hair algae where you want to. All other suggestions are band aids to kill your algae, but not to prevent it from coming back.

That's my goal right now. First kill the algae. And then prevent it from coming back afterwards.
So far I think I'm on the right path.

An ATS is easy enough for a DIY project. That is something I'll probably do after I'm done with the treatments I have on deck.

Well just did the Flucon treatment. Will see how it works out after a few weeks.
I added it while doing a 15g water change. To my replacement water.

Removed my skimmer cup.
Turned off the bio-pellet filter
Left the phosban reactor on.

Left the ceramic filter in. Should this come out?

I ran out of patience.

I am starting to wire brush the rocks one by one. And will redo the aquascaping while I'm at it.
I have way too much love rock and not enough design for flow in between each. I can add as many eave pumps as can fit but it's still will be impossible to get rid of dead spots the way the rocks are set. And this is a huge contributor to my algae issues.

So I'm taking drastic measures and pulling all the rock and wire brushing them all until they are completely bare from any green/brown colored algae.

After heck of a lot of work I cleaned each rock as best as possible and did the best aquascaping I could.

I'm making a DIY ATS tomorrow.

If all works out well and I can keep algae under control and have all levels where I want them to be then I will start adding corals in a month or so. And will see how well I can get growth.

Here is my super simple (double) ATS.

This is without the stand or pump attached yet.
Just a super simple design which I hope does the job...

After one day of running the ATS, the screens are already turning brown. Crazy how fast this starts working.
Used different types of LED grow lights. So far both look like the same results. Will see in time.

Can't wait to see it in a month...

Fluconozole has worked great for me on some aggressive bryopsis. You can get it online cheap I found a dose of about 75 mg per gallon and add a 250mg tablet every day for 10 days and it's gone in 2 weeks
