Algae on Birdsnest

Can I clean the algae (diatoms I think) off of my birdsnest? I was so dumb and got it because liveaquaria said it's easy. THEN I read it's not going to live in a new tank if algae covers it as it will smother.

It's really pretty and fairly large so I'd like to try to save it/keep it alive. Is there any way I might clean it other than blow it off?

thank you!

blow it off with a turkey baster..

If algae is growing on it then that part is probably already dead/no tissue.
Might just be best to snip that part off with some toe nail clippers

Ok, been doing that daily. How will I know if it dies?

They have "skin"..
If its gone and you only see the skeleton its dead..
Note: areas can die off too either STN or RTN and the coral still be alive..
I've got some green acro thats a few stalks 5"+ long when I got it.. The day I transported it from the store into the tank it started RTN and went up about 1" up the base.. Its been totally fine since then (but that area is still dead)

Post a pic if you want to know..

RTN/STN = rapid/slow tissue necrosis..

I'll get one tomorrow when the lights are on. I haven't had it too long but with my tank being new I've got diatoms like crrazy. I'm hoping they go away soon!

I think it may be dead but it looks the same to me as when it got here.

Picture might help. Its possible you have Dinoflagellates and not Diatoms.

Fish Keeper - I think that's it! I just googled and it looks exactly like that. I've seen a post on that somewhere, I'll go find it.

Thought that might be it since you usually don't see Diatoms on healthy coral tissue. Dinos gets on everything though. If it is indeed Dinos the bad news is these can be extremely hard to get rid of since there is no one cure all and just a bunch of combined approaches that eventually work and for some don't. Some have been fighting them for years.

I had my own battle with them for 7 months or so.

This is what I did that eventually got rid of mine so you get an idea( too long to list here).

Go to post 4001 and go back from there. I list most of my previous post numbers so it's easy to back track and see most of what I posted and how I got rid of mine. Still don't know what finally did them in. Best of luck

It looks exactly like it which sucks. I see it's not an easy thing to get rid of. Great. thank you, at least now I know what I'm dealing with.

It gets on my cabbage as well.

pfft... its fine.. have a nice day :)

But yeah I can see the tank is still "newish" you have the green rock phase..

lol, are you kidding me?
I know.. That why I am now demanding immediate pictures from anyone in the new forums.. :bounce3:

oh my salinity is 1.027 what should I do..
oh my birdsnest is nice and pink and looking good but I see a single brown spec of something..
:lolspin::lolspin:

Just playing schnebbles.. Coral looks to be just fine..
Good sized chunk there from LA..

Turkey baster is just fine to get minor debris off..

ok, thank you! I really try not to worry too much but I kind of did on that one since I read that algae can smother it. I know it's not covered but I wasn't sure just how much it could take.

it is a nice piece :)

I still have to figure if I have dino or diatoms.

Here's a question - several pieces were broken off during shipping. Will they grow? I just put them in some holes in the rock for now.

It's probably about 5" wide and 80-90. It's very pretty, I'm paranoid I suppose! it is on a nice piece of rock that fit just perfect in my tank.
